Claus Bertermann is a German–Spanish contemporary artist whose practice moves deliberately between figurative and abstract painting. His work is defined by a dual artistic approach in which figurative paintings serve as emotionally charged, narrative-driven statements, while abstraction functions as a parallel field of structural exploration, rhythm, and color. Figuration plays a central role in Claus Bertermann’s oeuvre. His large-scale figurative works address collective behavior, power structures, social tension, and psychological presence. Often referencing art-historical archetypes or familiar compositional settings, these paintings are not illustrative but confrontational. Figures appear fragmented, layered, and physically engaged, their gestures amplified through bold color contrasts and expressive mark-making. Tools such as brushes, rollers, and unconventional implements are used intentionally to disrupt habitual movement and introduce physical immediacy. These works are known for their strong emotional impact and have been placed successfully in private collections through direct sales and curated platforms. Alongside this figurative practice, Claus Bertermann maintains an equally rigorous abstract body of work. His abstract paintings focus on spatial balance, chromatic tension, and material presence. Built through repeated layering, erasure, and reapplication of paint, these works avoid narrative in favor of visual clarity and structural calm. Color acts as an architectural element, creating depth and rhythm within large-format compositions that integrate naturally into contemporary interiors. Born in 1965 in Stuttgart, Germany, Claus Bertermann was trained as an architect at the Technische Universität München (TUM). His architectural background informs his sensitivity to proportion, space, and composition, even as his painting practice intentionally challenges rigid systems. After years in architecture and entrepreneurship, he committed fully to painting later in life, a transition that brought maturity, focus, and independence to his artistic voice. A formative influence on Claus Bertermann’s artistic development was his grandfather, Guillermo Castañeda, a Spanish abstract and figurative painter active from the 1940s until his death in 2003. Growing up in close contact with his grandfather’s studio practice, Bertermann was exposed early to painting as a physical, emotional, and intuitive process. While his work today is entirely independent, this early experience shaped his understanding of painting as an act of presence rather than illustration. Claus Bertermann works primarily with oil, acrylic, pencil, and mixed media on canvas. His influences range from abstract expressionism and art brut to artists such as Georg Baselitz, Jean Dubuffet, Helen Frankenthaler, Gerhard Richter, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, while maintaining a clearly independent visual language. His works have appeared at major international auction houses including Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Artcurial, Tajan, Dorotheum, and Van Ham, achieving notable results. Claus Bertermann lives and works in Spain, where he continues to develop a practice defined by tension, contrast, and the coexistence of structure and intuition.
