David Alfaro Siqueiros Art

Mexican, 1896-1974
David Alfaro Siqueiros (born José de Jesús Alfaro Siqueiros; December 29, 1896 – January 6, 1974) was a Mexican social realist painter, best known for his large public murals using the latest in equipment, materials and technique. Along with Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, he was one of the most famous of the "Mexican muralists".[1] He was a member of the Mexican Communist Party, and a Stalinist and supporter of the Soviet Union who led an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Leon Trotsky in May 1940.

PORTRAIT OF MOISES SAENZ.
By David Alfaro Siqueiros
Located in Portland, ME
Siqueiros, David Alfaro (Mexican, 1896-1974). PORTRAIT OF MOISES SAENZ. Lithograph, 1931. Edition of 50. Publshed by Weyhe Gallery, New York, and printed by George Miller. Signed in pencil. 21 1/2 x 16 1/8 inches, 545 x 410 mm. (image), 28 1/4 x 23 inches, 718 x 583 mm. (sheet). In very good condition aside from two vary small abraded areas at the bottom right of the image. This is one of several portrait heads of distingushed Mexican public figures that Siqueiros did in lithography which were published by Weyhe. Most of them share the characteristic of making the head the entire composition, creating the effect of monumental sculpture. Moises Saenz was an educator who was influenced by the theories and philosophy of John Dewey.

This print was made for the American Abstract Artists Portfolio, 1937. All the images were lithographs made on zinc plates. Usually they were signed in the image -- on the plate, as this one is. As a group they explored abstraction in the 1930s, while maintaining their individual styles. The plan was to make an edition of 500 portfolios although it seems highly unlikely that this was accomplished. Ibram Lassaw (1913-2003) was primarily known for his sculpture. Born in Egypt to a Russian family...
