‘Miami Crypto-Man: Homage to Magritte’ is a mixed-media collage by the Milwaukee-based artist and gallerist David Barnett. In this artwork, Barnett brings references to René Magritte, the contemporary art world, and also technology and cryptocurrency. As Barnett describes:
“This series was born out of my visit to Art Basel and the Miami Art fair in 2019 to which I wore this aqua-colored linen sport coat. Over the course of my five-day visit to the fairs, at least 50 people came to me and asked where I bought the sport coat. They all wanted to buy one! I was quite amused and flattered. I thought to myself that this should be the basis for a new art series called "the Miami Man." My plan was to purchase twenty-five or thirty sport coats, but upon my return to Milwaukee I discovered they were no longer available in the aqua color. As an alternative, we photographed the sport coat, front and back, and printed it in several sizes on archival watercolor paper as well as on canvas. The sizes range from only nine inches tall all the way to forty inches tall.
“For this work from the series, I decided to add a Magritte-like element by using a sand dollar. In his paintings, Magritte often obscured the face of his figures with objects like apples. Here, however, I have done the same using a sand dollar. This sand dollar is the one that I dove for when I was on the gulf coast of Florida more than 40 years ago. I also added to the title "crypto" to this work because of the sand dollar, tying this very natural object to the new advent of cryptocurrency.
