Doris McCarthy Abstract Photography

Canadian, 1910-2010
Doris McCarthy was born in Calgary in 1910 and showed an early interest in art. Her family moved to Toronto in 1913 and she enrolled at the Ontario College of Art in 1925, where she studied under Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald, and J.W. Beatty. Lismer helped her secure a job teaching art classes at the Art Gallery of Toronto in 1930, which she continued for the next five years. Additionally, she continued her own education with a course at the Hamilton Technical School, where Hortense Gordon offered her critical analysis of design and composition. McCarthy became a teacher at the Central Technical School in 1933, where she stayed until 1972. In the summers she would travel and paint; the landscape was most often her subject matter. In 1942 Mellors Gallery (now Roberts Gallery) hosted McCarthy’s first solo exhibition; 1945 saw her become a member of the Ontario Society of Artists, and in 1951 she was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy. She exhibited many times throughout the years with both of these groups, as well as with the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. Retrospectives of McCarthy’s work were mounted in 1990, 1992, 1996 and two in 1999. In 2004 she was honoured by the University of Toronto, Scarborough, with the opening of the Doris McCarthy Gallery. 'Cicatrices 3' Large scale photo. Agave leaf, female tropical blue teal green
By Sophia Milligan
Located in Penzance, GB
'Cicatrices (3)' Limited edition archival photograph. Unframed, hand signed and numbered _________________ Scars of birthing in the unfolding leaf pattern of the giant graceful Agave. The sensual contradictions of silken flesh and the protective spines are a contemplation of motherhood's journey, the unfolding narrative impressed eternally upon the skin. Sophia's poetic photographs are an exploration of the balance in all things: in the sensual interplay of light and shadow; in wild raw energy and serene stillness; in joy and pain; in the enduring and the effervescent. They are a contemplation of the awareness that everything in existence is temporary, they speak of the ephemeral nature of all things. Moments, feelings, experiences cherished and appreciated in their impermanence, for that is where the beauty comes from. 'I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within... tangible traces, evidence left behind, records; process in action, stilled'. 40 x 60 inches Limited edition of 25 Archival Print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® paper, one of the most beautiful and high quality art papers available. The luxurious matt finish provides a reflection free image that is rich in detail, depth and tone. Hand signed, titled and numbered to the lower right corner on an approximately 1 inch white border. Each print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity featuring a signature and edition number. * Please note that images of the artwork in situ and framed are an indication of how the piece can look, and in the context of other artworks. The artwork is being sold unframed. ________________________________ About The Artist Sophia Milligan...

Columbine: The Mystery of Five Doves, Layered Images of Flowers in Violet Blue
By Lisa A. Frank
Located in Kent, CT
This botanical photograph features flowers, butterflies, and doves in an abstracted composition. Shades of violet and blue stand out brightly against the darkened background, and blurred images of butterflies suggest movement in contrast to the still flowers. Edition 2 of 15. Printed on archival Simply Elegant Gold Fiber Paper 310gsm, mounted on Sintra with non-glare plexiglas. Lisa A. Frank’s large-scale photographs are kaleidoscopic multilayered images of the natural world. The work’s complex patterns are composed from the artist’s deep archive of her own photographs; the images are digitally collaged and arranged in patterns that take cues from historic wallpaper designs. Densely ornamental, the work draws upon the artist's background as a textile designer as well as the interior decoration documents of Britain’s Aesthetic...

By Rinko Kawauchi
Located in Zurich, CH
RINKO KAWAUCHI (*1972, Japan) Untitled, from the series of Halo 2017 Lambda print Sheet 50 x 75 cm (19 5/8 x 29 1/2 in.) Edition of 3 (#1/3) Kawauchi burst on the international scene in 2001 when she was awarded the Kimura-Ihei-Prize, Japan’s most important emerging talent photography prize, shortly followed by the simultaneous publication of three beautiful books, Utatane (Catnap), Hanabi (Fireworks), and Hanako, her very personal study of a young girl of the same name. Met with great critical acclaim, these “visual essays” demonstrate her finesse and skill of telling a photographic tale. Since this triple-debut, the artist has gone to publish another eleven books, the newest of which are Illuminance and Ametsuchi. Kawauchi, currently one of the most famed contemporary female Asian artists...
