Green Street, Bodie, California, Oil Painting
By Doug Cosbie
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
This work is from Doug's painting trip to Bodie, California. He worked to show the rolling clouds, late day shadows and burnished color emblematic of the arid, hot day. Part of Doug's signature series of plein air paintings, capturing the character and enduring beauty of the rural American landscape. He says he loves working outdoors, where all of his senses are engaged. "It is a very creative environment, as you have to work quickly as nature changes," Doug explains. "I ignore what I don't want so the confusion of shapes and colors are reduced to the essentials. The key is to modify or even eliminate objects, as it's rare you will ever find ready-made compositions."

American Gothic House, Oil Painting
By Doug Cosbie
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
"Eldon is the stereotype of a small Iowa town and a simpler time," shares artist Doug Cosbie. On the outskirts, the viewer encounters a large open field and their first glimpse of one of America's most iconic buildings—the Gothic house. Doug features the classic architecture of the rustic design with its distinctive upper window. He presents an ode to the 1930 Grant Wood's piece, generally considered his most famous work and among the most recognized paintings in twentieth-century American art.

By Doug Cosbie

Artist Comments
Old farm buildings near Virginia's Shenandoah National Park on a hot, humid September day. The colorful landscape and sky made with deliberate impressionist brushwork bring this simple moment to life. Part of Doug's signature series of plein air paintings, capturing the character and enduring beauty of the rural American landscape. He says he loves working outdoors, where all of his senses are engaged. "It is a very creative environment, as you have to work quickly as nature changes," Doug explains. "Creativity when making art is not about interpreting exactly what you see it. New ideas are formed by interesting contrasts, and interesting paintings happen when things are out of place. I paint the dark shadows boldly, the light with minimal use of white. My sky is not always blue, and the grass not always green, as long as it captures the essence."

Amish Farm, Heuvelton, New York, Oil Painting
By Doug Cosbie

Artist Comments
"The area of Heuvelton in St. Lawrence County in upstate New York is home to a highly conservative group of Amish," says Doug. He used clear line and form to capture the simplicity of the local lifestyle in a fall landscape. A glistening buggy sits next to the stable barn, white washed buildings dot the scene and a clear sky overhead stands out against the burnished browns and yellow. Part of Doug's signature series of plein air paintings, capturing the character and enduring beauty of the rural American landscape. Tin Barn, St Lawrence County, NY, Oil Painting
By Doug Cosbie
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
"For years, barns were wood," explains artist Doug Cosbie. "Then, about 50 years ago, farmers started using tin-coated panels for barns and sheds. Tin panels were used to wrap barn frames and create long-lasting protection from the outside elements, and it seemed that that was the end of wood barns. Now, like the old wood construction, barn tin is being replaced by modern metals and synthetics. Once again, another iconic symbol of the rural farming way of life is disappearing as the old tin ends up in landfills."
