Driade Furniture

Italian

Italian furniture brand Driade offers modern designs that are joyful, whimsical and slightly mischievous — words that might be used to describe the tree nymph of Greek mythology for which the company is named. Faye Toogood’s chunky, stout Roly Poly armchair and Fabio Novembre’s enigmatic Nemo chair — in which a backrest assumes the form of a human face — are just two examples of Driade’s eclectic furnishings.

Driade was founded in 1968 by brother and sister Enrico and Antonia Astori, and Adelaide Acerbi Astori, Enrico’s wife. Described by the company as a “factory of art,” Driade was focused solely on bringing distinctive and creative seating, case pieces and decorative objects to market in its early years. The brand sought to mass-produce decor and furniture that could also be seen as provocative works of art.

Driade's initial collaborations included Italian designers such as Enzo Mari, Nanda Vigo, Giotto Stoppino and Rodolfo Bonetto, to name a few. In the 1980s, the brand worked with influential and renowned designers from around the globe. In 1984, Driade partnered with French designer Philippe Starck and debuted his iconic Costes armchair during the same year. Projects with architects and furniture designers such as Ron Arad, Toyo Ito, Borek Sipek, Patricia Urquiola and others followed into the 2000s.

Over more than five decades — the company celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2018 — Driade’s fruitful partnerships have culminated in a vast catalog of chairs, sofas, coffee tables and other furnishings for the home and garden that evoke a unique and diverse blend of cultures.

Driade has also garnered international acclaim, winning the Compasso d’Oro award in 1979 and 2001 for Enzo Mari’s Delfira chair and ebony-finished, chipboard-top table, and again in 2008 for Ron Arad’s MT3 rocking armchair.

On 1stDibs, discover a range of vintage and contemporary Driade tables, cabinets, armchairs and other furniture.

"Nemo" Black or Red Lacquered Head-Armchair by Fabio Novembre for Driade, 2017
By Driade, Fabio Novembre
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Nemo" is a polyethylene monobloc fixed or swivel iconic head-armchair, designed by Fabio Novembre and manufactured by Driade, available in black or red lacquered colors. Swivel version is for indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 32.6", W. 35.4", H. 53.1", Seat H. 16.1" FABIO NOVEMBRE uses furniture design to tell intense and fascinating stories in which the protagonist is often the human figure. This human figure is capable of becoming abstract and universal, able to propose a mythical beauty as occurred in Greek art. So that Nemo, a face with classic features, is hollowed out to create an inhabitable space. The result is a head-armchair to be lived from the inside. Like a mask, it simultaneously conceals and reveals its inhabitant. Fabio Novembre said about Nemo: "In 2010 it happened that the name "Nemo" immediately evoked the famous little fish, protagonist of the movie of the same name, made by Pixar in 2003. If this question had been asked at the end of the nineteenth century, the answer would have probably been Captain Nemo...

"Tokyo-Pop" White or Black Monobloc Sofa Designed by T. Yoshioka for Driade
By Tokujin Yoshioka, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Tokyo-Pop" is a white or black anthracite polyethylene monobloc iconic sofa, designed by Tokujin Yoshioka and manufactured by Driade. White version only is available in quick ship. Indoor and outdoor use. DIMENSIONS: D. 30.7", W. 69.5", H. 29.7", Seat H. 16.5" Tokyo-Pop collection was Tokujin Yoshioka's debut on the international design scene in 2002. Now he's considered as one of the masters of contemporary design. With his set of sofa, armchair and especially chaise longue and stool he seems to ignore the trivial qualities of rotational plastic molding and turn them into real sculptures featuring unforgettable and unusual forms. TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA, born in Japan in 1967 and winner of many awards, with pieces on display at the MoMA and the Cooper Hewitt in New York, the Victoria & Albert in London and the Vitra Design Museum, trained along with Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake, opened his own studio in 2000, and has worked with Japanese and international companies such as Hermès, Toyota, BMW and Swarovski, designing showrooms and installations. As a result of the success of the Honey-pop paper chair in 2001, he began establishing increasingly close links with the world of interior design, developing projects for Driade, Moroso and Kartell, amongst the others. The main feature of his creations is their poetic, light, dreamlike quality. His products, interiors and installations are the result of painstaking, complex research carried out on simple materials, combined with experimental technology. The awards he won include Design Miami...

Located in Brooklyn, NY

DIMENSIONS: D. 55.1", W. 78.7", H. 28.3" In a table, oval means perfect: no edge, no head of the table, no “odd” diner and, above all, a form expanded in space. Antonia Astori balanced then the top elegant simplicity with a sculptural base, made of a malleable as well as contemporary material. ANTONIA ASTORI, after graduating in Industrial and Visual Design at Lausanne, founded Driade in 1968 with her brother, Enrico, and sister-in-law, Adelaide Acerbi. She has designed furniture systems and furnishings as well as installations and exhibitions for Driade. In addition to her work in furniture design, she has also worked in interior design on projects for homes, offices, showrooms and stores. Her long-standing partnership with the French fashion designers, Marithé and François...
