Driade Furniture

Italian

Italian furniture brand Driade offers modern designs that are joyful, whimsical and slightly mischievous — words that might be used to describe the tree nymph of Greek mythology for which the company is named. Faye Toogood’s chunky, stout Roly Poly armchair and Fabio Novembre’s enigmatic Nemo chair — in which a backrest assumes the form of a human face — are just two examples of Driade’s eclectic furnishings.

Driade was founded in 1968 by brother and sister Enrico and Antonia Astori, and Adelaide Acerbi Astori, Enrico’s wife. Described by the company as a “factory of art,” Driade was focused solely on bringing distinctive and creative seating, case pieces and decorative objects to market in its early years. The brand sought to mass-produce decor and furniture that could also be seen as provocative works of art.

Driade's initial collaborations included Italian designers such as Enzo Mari, Nanda Vigo, Giotto Stoppino and Rodolfo Bonetto, to name a few. In the 1980s, the brand worked with influential and renowned designers from around the globe. In 1984, Driade partnered with French designer Philippe Starck and debuted his iconic Costes armchair during the same year. Projects with architects and furniture designers such as Ron Arad, Toyo Ito, Borek Sipek, Patricia Urquiola and others followed into the 2000s.

Over more than five decades — the company celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2018 — Driade’s fruitful partnerships have culminated in a vast catalog of chairs, sofas, coffee tables and other furnishings for the home and garden that evoke a unique and diverse blend of cultures.

Driade has also garnered international acclaim, winning the Compasso d’Oro award in 1979 and 2001 for Enzo Mari’s Delfira chair and ebony-finished, chipboard-top table, and again in 2008 for Ron Arad’s MT3 rocking armchair.

On 1stDibs, discover a range of vintage and contemporary Driade tables, cabinets, armchairs and other furniture.

There are objects universally recognized as icons. Costes easy chair that, in 1984, marked the beginning of the partnership between Philippe Starck and Driade such as the consecration of the designer, formerly unknown in Italy, is one of these objects. Designed for the homonymous, now disappeared, Parisian café, owes its timeless success to the absoluteness of forms: a dark wooden embracing structure with three highly tilted legs. By Ludovica + Roberto Palomba 1, Driade

Located in Brooklyn, NY

"Fenix" is a three-seat sofa, designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba and manufactured by Driade, with a wooden and steel structure, supported by anthracite painted steel legs, polyurethane foam padding and cushions with polyurethane foams and goose feather padding. Fixed structure leather cover and removable cushions in fabric or leather. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 35.4", W. 118", H. 31.5", Seat H. 16.1" Sectional sofa has been the main recurrent theme concerning typological researches since last century golden age of design. Ludovica and Roberto Palomba deal with it emphasizing the sense of suspension from the floor, thanks to a thin metal structure, and modelling a great peninsula, provided with a gracefully asymmetric shape, in the version with terminals. LUDOVICA and ROBERTO PALOMBA, architects, work and live in Milan. They founded Palomba Serafini Associati in 1994. They received many international awards such as Compasso D'Oro, Elle Decoration International Design Award, Red Dot, Design Plus, Good Design Award, German Design Award. Indoor and outdoor use. DIMENSIONS: D. 30.7", W. 69.5", H. 29.7", Seat H. 16.5" Tokyo-Pop collection was Tokujin Yoshioka's debut on the international design scene in 2002. Now he's considered as one of the masters of contemporary design. With his set of sofa, armchair and especially chaise longue and stool he seems to ignore the trivial qualities of rotational plastic molding and turn them into real sculptures featuring unforgettable and unusual forms. TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA, born in Japan in 1967 and winner of many awards, with pieces on display at the MoMA and the Cooper Hewitt in New York, the Victoria & Albert in London and the Vitra Design Museum, trained along with Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake, opened his own studio in 2000, and has worked with Japanese and international companies such as Hermès, Toyota, BMW and Swarovski, designing showrooms and installations. As a result of the success of the Honey-pop paper chair in 2001, he began establishing increasingly close links with the world of interior design, developing projects for Driade, Moroso and Kartell, amongst the others. The main feature of his creations is their poetic, light, dreamlike quality. His products, interiors and installations are the result of painstaking, complex research carried out on simple materials, combined with experimental technology. The awards he won include Design Miami...

"Waterfall" Lacquered Coffee Table Designed by Fredrikson Stallard for Driade

By Fredrikson Stallard, Driade

Located in Brooklyn, NY

"Waterfall" is a white, gold or blue lacquered polyurethane Baydur iconic coffee table, designed by Fredrikson Stallard and manufactured by Driade. White lacquered version only is available in quick ship. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 23.6", W. 85", H. 13.3" Even a coffee table can become a piece of art if it can transcend typological limitations. Fredrikson Stallard deal with the issue by the strength of the material to be bent and shaped. The result is a completely new form, marked by an important and expressionistic depression in the centre of the top. PATRIK FREDRIKSON and IAN STALLARD began their collaboration in 1995 and have since become internationally recognized as leading exponents of British avant-garde design. They are well known for their ability to translate their creativity into simple yet emotionally engaging fine artwork and furniture. Their cutting edge, conceptually rigorous work has been regularly discussed and praised in the design press and is sought after by discerning collectors and furniture producers. Their work has been acquired by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, twice by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the French National Art Collection, and shown at the Design Museum in London, MoMA and the Museum of Art and Design in New York. Their clients include some of the leading names in contemporary design including Swarovski, Chanel, Veuve Clicquot, Comme des Garcons, Dunhill, Remy Martin, The London Design Festival, Bernhardt Design, David Gill Galleries, Contrasts Gallery, Tools Gallery, Mitterand & Cramer, The Savoy Hotel, Soho & Tribeca Grand, Tarkett and Iittala. Fredrikson Stallard has exhibited widely including in London, Milan, Paris, Madrid, New York, San Francisco, Shanghai, Basel and Miami. Their work is given extensive coverage by press and print, featuring in books and publications such as The International design Yearbook, The Furniture Machine by Gareth Williams, Collecting Design in a Contemporary Market, 21st Century design by Marcus Fairs, The New York Times, Art & Auction, The London Times...

"Blocco" Black Mongolian Fur or Velvet Pouf Designed by Nanda Vigo for Driade

By Driade, Nanda Vigo

Located in Brooklyn, NY

"Blocco" is a pouf, designed by Nanda Vigo and manufactured by Driade, with wooden frame and padding in polyurethane foam of varying density. Upholstery in black Mongolian fur or in Loira velvet. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 19.2", W. 17.3", H. 22.8", Seat H. 14.1" The “Blocco” seat / pouf, designed with such purpose in 1970, has got now a fresh re-edition with the same function but with a more joyful spirit by offering colorful covers. Have a nice seat! Nanda Vigo said about "Blocco": "Many elements called “furniture” are needed that actually remain “fixed”, once set, to the well-being. I've always rejected the tendency to overload space; therefore I have always worked to the limit of need." NANDA VIGO, born in Milan in 1936, lives in East Africa and works in Milan. She showed an interest in art at a very early age, when she had the opportunity to spend time with Filippo de Pisis, a family friend, and to study the architecture of Giuseppe Terragni, in which she immediately noticed the subtle employment of natural light. She studied architecture at the Ecole Polytechnique in Lausanne, worked as an intern in San Francisco, then returned to Italy where she opened her own studio in Milan. The underlying characteristic of the work has always been the relationship between light and space, which she has developed in a series of “environments” that blend architecture and design. In 1959 she began to visit the studio of Lucio Fontana and got to know that artists who founded the Azimut Gallery in Milan: Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani and Vincenzo Agnetti. During that period, she developed relations with the artists of the Zero group in Germany, the Netherlands and France, as a result of which her work was shown in more than 400 solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe. Between 1964 and 1966 she participated in some thirteen Zero exhibitions, including “Nul 65” at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and “Zero: An Exhibition of European Experimental Art” at the Modern Art Gallery in Washington D.C.. She was the curator of the legendary exhibition “Zero avantgarde” in 1965 in Fontana’s studio in Milan, at which some 28 artists were represented. In 1964 she created Utopie with Lucio Fontana for the Triennale. Again at the Triennale, in 1973 she organized a performance at which architects and artists freely intervened: it's considered to have been the first happening at the event. In 1974 she received the New York Award for the Industrial Design for the Golden Gate lamp...
