Driade Furniture

Italian

Italian furniture brand Driade offers modern designs that are joyful, whimsical and slightly mischievous — words that might be used to describe the tree nymph of Greek mythology for which the company is named. Faye Toogood’s chunky, stout Roly Poly armchair and Fabio Novembre’s enigmatic Nemo chair — in which a backrest assumes the form of a human face — are just two examples of Driade’s eclectic furnishings.

Driade was founded in 1968 by brother and sister Enrico and Antonia Astori, and Adelaide Acerbi Astori, Enrico’s wife. Described by the company as a “factory of art,” Driade was focused solely on bringing distinctive and creative seating, case pieces and decorative objects to market in its early years. The brand sought to mass-produce decor and furniture that could also be seen as provocative works of art.

Driade's initial collaborations included Italian designers such as Enzo Mari, Nanda Vigo, Giotto Stoppino and Rodolfo Bonetto, to name a few. In the 1980s, the brand worked with influential and renowned designers from around the globe. In 1984, Driade partnered with French designer Philippe Starck and debuted his iconic Costes armchair during the same year. Projects with architects and furniture designers such as Ron Arad, Toyo Ito, Borek Sipek, Patricia Urquiola and others followed into the 2000s.

Over more than five decades — the company celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2018 — Driade’s fruitful partnerships have culminated in a vast catalog of chairs, sofas, coffee tables and other furnishings for the home and garden that evoke a unique and diverse blend of cultures.

Driade has also garnered international acclaim, winning the Compasso d’Oro award in 1979 and 2001 for Enzo Mari’s Delfira chair and ebony-finished, chipboard-top table, and again in 2008 for Ron Arad’s MT3 rocking armchair.

On 1stDibs, discover a range of vintage and contemporary Driade tables, cabinets, armchairs and other furniture.

Ziqqurat Cabinet L Floral and Walnut by Driade
By Driade
Located in Beverly Hills, CA
What could the design of a storage cabinet be like today? This is the question DriadeLab, Driade’s observatory on contemporary lifestyles, asked itself when it started to research into this project. The result was Ziqqurat:a cabinet made up of different boxes that can be piled up to create everchanging forms. This system, constructive in all respects, can be used to create arrangements of three different sizes depending on the space available. The project’s source of inspiration, ancient sumerian pyramids, is no random choice: it is such a strong theme that it even gave its name to the cabinet. In 2020 Driade, the aesthetic laboratory par excellence, proposed an expansion of the Ziqqurat collection in the iconic patterns: romantic in the floral version with tassels or pop in the white and black geometric version with black handle. The collection is therefore enriched with new 'must have' pieces that are added to the three-heighted modular container and to the vertical one: small cabinet and extra small...

"Nemo" Denim Colored Head-Armchair Designed by Fabio Novembre for Driade, 2017
By Fabio Novembre, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Nemo" is an iconic polyethylene monobloc head-armchair available in denim color, made by rotational molding. Fixed (indoor and outdoor use) or swivel (indoor use only) versions available. DIMENSIONS: D. 32.6", W. 35.4", H. 53.1", Seat H. 16.1" FABIO NOVEMBRE uses furniture design to tell intense and fascinating stories in which the protagonist is often the human figure. This human figure is capable of becoming abstract and universal, able to propose a mythical beauty as occurred in Greek art. So that Nemo, a face with classic features, is hollowed out to create an inhabitable space. The result is a head-armchair to be lived from the inside. Like a mask, it simultaneously conceals and reveals its inhabitant. Fabio Novembre said about Nemo: "In 2010 it happened that the name "Nemo" immediately evoked the famous little fish, protagonist of the movie of the same name, made by Pixar in 2003. If this question had been asked at the end of the nineteenth century, the answer would have probably been Captain Nemo...

"Waterfall" Lacquered Coffee Table Designed by Fredrikson Stallard for Driade
By Fredrikson Stallard, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Waterfall" is a white, gold or blue lacquered polyurethane Baydur iconic coffee table, designed by Fredrikson Stallard and manufactured by Driade. White lacquered version only is available in quick ship. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 23.6", W. 85", H. 13.3" Even a coffee table can become a piece of art if it can transcend typological limitations. Fredrikson Stallard deal with the issue by the strength of the material to be bent and shaped. The result is a completely new form, marked by an important and expressionistic depression in the centre of the top. PATRIK FREDRIKSON and IAN STALLARD began their collaboration in 1995 and have since become internationally recognized as leading exponents of British avant-garde design. They are well known for their ability to translate their creativity into simple yet emotionally engaging fine artwork and furniture. Their cutting edge, conceptually rigorous work has been regularly discussed and praised in the design press and is sought after by discerning collectors and furniture producers. Their work has been acquired by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, twice by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the French National Art Collection, and shown at the Design Museum in London, MoMA and the Museum of Art and Design in New York. Their clients include some of the leading names in contemporary design including Swarovski, Chanel, Veuve Clicquot, Comme des Garcons, Dunhill, Remy Martin, The London Design Festival, Bernhardt Design, David Gill Galleries, Contrasts Gallery, Tools Gallery, Mitterand & Cramer, The Savoy Hotel, Soho & Tribeca Grand, Tarkett and Iittala. Fredrikson Stallard has exhibited widely including in London, Milan, Paris, Madrid, New York, San Francisco, Shanghai, Basel and Miami. Their work is given extensive coverage by press and print, featuring in books and publications such as The International design Yearbook, The Furniture Machine by Gareth Williams, Collecting Design in a Contemporary Market, 21st Century design by Marcus Fairs, The New York Times, Art & Auction, The London Times...

By Nanda Vigo, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Blocco" is a pouf, designed by Nanda Vigo and manufactured by Driade, with wooden frame and padding in polyurethane foam of varying density. Upholstery in black Mongolian fur or in Loira velvet. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 19.2", W. 17.3", H. 22.8", Seat H. 14.1" The “Blocco” seat / pouf, designed with such purpose in 1970, has got now a fresh re-edition with the same function but with a more joyful spirit by offering colorful covers. Have a nice seat! Nanda Vigo said about "Blocco": "Many elements called “furniture” are needed that actually remain “fixed”, once set, to the well-being. I've always rejected the tendency to overload space; therefore I have always worked to the limit of need." NANDA VIGO, born in Milan in 1936, lives in East Africa and works in Milan. She showed an interest in art at a very early age, when she had the opportunity to spend time with Filippo de Pisis, a family friend, and to study the architecture of Giuseppe Terragni, in which she immediately noticed the subtle employment of natural light. She studied architecture at the Ecole Polytechnique in Lausanne, worked as an intern in San Francisco, then returned to Italy where she opened her own studio in Milan. The underlying characteristic of the work has always been the relationship between light and space, which she has developed in a series of “environments” that blend architecture and design. In 1959 she began to visit the studio of Lucio Fontana and got to know that artists who founded the Azimut Gallery in Milan: Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani and Vincenzo Agnetti. During that period, she developed relations with the artists of the Zero group in Germany, the Netherlands and France, as a result of which her work was shown in more than 400 solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe. Between 1964 and 1966 she participated in some thirteen Zero exhibitions, including “Nul 65” at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and “Zero: An Exhibition of European Experimental Art” at the Modern Art Gallery in Washington D.C.. She was the curator of the legendary exhibition “Zero avantgarde” in 1965 in Fontana’s studio in Milan, at which some 28 artists were represented. In 1964 she created Utopie with Lucio Fontana for the Triennale. Again at the Triennale, in 1973 she organized a performance at which architects and artists freely intervened: it's considered to have been the first happening at the event. In 1974 she received the New York Award for the Industrial Design for the Golden Gate lamp...

"Sereno" Aluminum/Gold Plated Legs Coffee Table by Fredrikson Stallard, Driade
By Driade, Fredrikson Stallard
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Sereno" is an iconic coffee table, designed by Fredrikson Stallard and manufactured by Driade, with sculpture-like legs in polished cast aluminum or cast aluminum gold plated finished and MDF top with mirror polished stainless steel coating. The version with gold plated legs only is available in quick ship (1-2 weeks). Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 51.1", W. 51.1", H. 22" With "Sereno" Fredrikson Stallard create a moment of calm and solitude. Forms themselves are generated from violently created shards of glass, but they become unified into an utter stillness by including them into a simple flat sheet and turning the group into polished stainless steel. This creates a reflection of the three unified elements onto the flat surface. This even further shifts their nature from turmoil to serenity, so they resolve themselves through a new set-up of balance and symmetry. Their work is given extensive coverage by press and print, featuring in books and publications such as The International design Yearbook, The Furniture Machine by Gareth Williams, Collecting Design in a Contemporary Market, 21st Century design by Marcus Fairs, The New York Times, Art & Auction, The London Times, Architectural Digest, Vogue, Wallpaper*, Art Review, Blueprint, ID and many others. Fredrikson Stallard has been the recipient of some of the most prestigious design awards, including the Red Dot Design Award and The Arts Foundation Furniture...

Meridiana Chair in Transparent by Christophe Pillet for Driade
By Christophe Pillet, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
The Meridiana table stems from the ultimate globetrotter chair, revised this year with solid wooden legs. An archetype of the coffee shop or domestic table, it displays a precious balance between the round, wood particleboard top and the solid wood frame and legs. A mass-colored clay mixture is smoothed over the top by hand with a scraper. The table’s aesthetic is distinguished by the shaded, handmade finish of its top. Available in the following colors: Volcano red, Lava black and Champagne. Born in 1959, he graduated from the Academy of Decorative Arts in Nice in 1985 and a year later took a post-graduate course at the Domus Academy in Milan. From 1986 to 1988 he worked with Martine Bedin in Milan, and from 1988 to 1993 with Philippe Starck in Paris. His first items of furniture, issued by XO, date from 1991. Since May 1993 he has been working as an independent designer. His work ranges from furniture to product design, from interior design to architecture and exhibit design. He works, among others, with Artelano, Cappellini, Ceccotti, JC Decaux, Driade, Mazzega, Moroso, Trussardi, Daum, Moët e Chandon, Ecart International, Lacoste Lancome, l’Oreal, Shiseido, Whirlpool. Nominated Creator of the Year in 1995, he has exhibited his works at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Lucerne and at many other prestige venues. Among his most recent works or works in progress...
