An impressive Ceylonese centre table, dating to circa 1840, during the late William IV to early Victorian period, crafted from solid ebony and calamander. The table stands on a substantial solid ebony turned central column, boldly carved with acanthus leaf ornament. Six finely carved scroll supports radiate from the column, uniting it with the base, which is constructed from calamander, ebony and raised on solid bun feet. This 19th century round Biedermeir pedestal table features fantastic artistry and craftsmanship. The top is inlaid with exotic wood, the base is inlaid with vertical stripes, and the foot features a horizontal inlay of the same design as the top band. The table top is centered with a classic sunburst inlay of a lighter wood. The edge of the table top is reeded, and inlaid with fleurettes of lighter wood. Finally the piece rests on bun feet at the bottom. This piece is a collection of a fourth generation, family owned business in New Orleans called The French Antique Shop. The store was first opened by Marie and Marcel Granet in Paris when they married in 1927. A jewish family, they came to the United States before the outbreak of the Second World War, leaving on the last boat out of Paris' port, Le Havre.
