George Condo Art

American, b. 1957
George Condo was born in Concord, New Hampshire in 1957. He attended the University of Massachusetts, in Lowell, where he studied Music Theory and Art History. Condo’s art can be viewed as a multilayered experience that brings the viewer in touch with a psychological exploration of human nature. Through the process of transformation involving art historical language and an actualization of philosophical content, Condo’s paintings create a visible window into the world we live in. His work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; The National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Judith Rothschild Foundation, Philadelphia; Broad Art Foundation, Los Angeles; Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles; Tate Modern, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Ministère de la Culture, Paris; Fonds Regional d’Art Contemporain, Ile de France, Paris; Staedel Museum, Frankfurt; Dakis Joannou Collection Foundation, Athens; Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo; Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona; the Doron Sebbag Art Collection, ORS Ltd., Tel Aviv; Museo Jumex, Mexico City; and Moderna Museet, Stockholm. Condo has been invited to lecture at many prestigious institutions including Columbia University, Yale University, Pasadena Art Center, San Francisco MOMA, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Mr. Condo taught a six-month course at Harvard University entitled Painting Memory. In 1999 Mr. Condo received an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; in 2005 he received the Francis J. Greenberger Award; in 2013 Condo was honored by the New York Studio School; in 2018 he was a BOMB Magazine 2018 Anniversary Gala Honoree. Condo recently performed, painting live, on-stage in Anthony Roth Constanzo’s Glass Handel, an opera co-produced by the Philadelphia Opera and National Sawdust, featuring the music of George Frideric Handel and Phillip Glass. In 2019, Condo was selected to participate in the 58th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia: May You Live in Interesting Times, curated by Ralph Rugoff. Condo was also the subject of a major retrospective of works on paper titled The Way I Think at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C., in early 2017, which travelled to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark in the Fall of 2017. In 2016 Condo’s work was the feature of a museum-wide exhibition, Confrontation, at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Museum Berggruen, Berlin, curated by Udo Kittelmann. In 2011, the New Museum, New York presented the retrospective exhibition, Mental States. This exhibition travelled to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Hayward Gallery, London; and Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt. EDUCATION 1976-78 Lowell University, Massachusetts

GARDEN ROMANCE Signed Lithograph, Black Couple, Collage Portrait Lovers, Flowers
By James Denmark
Located in Union City, NJ
GARDEN ROMANCE by the artist James Denmark is an original hand drawn, limited edition lithograph(not a photo reproduction or digital print) printed on archival Somerset paper using traditional hand lithography techniques. GARDEN ROMANCE is one of Denmark's expressive, colorful collage compositions of everyday African American life - a lovely flower garden scene featuring a romantic black couple, the woman seated amid the blossoming plants wearing a green and yellow paisley print dress and head wrap; her standing male companion with flower in hand, dressed in blue denim jeans, and pastel color patchwork print shirt. Vivid coloration, watercolor patterns, and collage effect textures captivate the eye with visual variety in a striking palette of blues, greens, white, red, orange, magenta, touches of yellow, lavender and dark black - a fine example of the intricacies of hand lithography! Print size - 32 x 21.25 in., archival framing, double mat, excellent condition, pencil signed and numbered - Certificate of Authenticity provided 1 / 15 H.C. by James Denmark, publisher's chop embossed lower left corner Edition size - 250, plus proofs Year published - 1996 Printer - JK Fine Art Editions Co. HOPES FOR PEACE Signed Lithograph Abstract Dove, Airbrush Colors, Spanish Artist
Located in Union City, NJ
HOPES FOR PEACE is a handmade color lithograph by the internationally recognized Spanish artist Cristóbal Gabarrón printed on archival Arches printmaking paper in 1986. HOPES FOR PEACE is an imaginative composition depicting an abstract bird expressed in airbrush colors as a dove symbolizing world peace. HOPES FOR PEACE is a visually appealing handmade lithograph printed in soft rainbow shades of purple, yellow, magenta pink, blue green, beige, light orange, gray and black. Print size - 11.0" x 8.5" unframed, vivid colors, excellent condition, hand signed and numbered in pencil by Cristóbal Gabarrón Edition size - 500, Certificate of Authenticity included Cristóbal Gabarrón - HOPES FOR PEACE was specially commissioned by The World Federation of UN Associations (WFUNA) in 1986 - the International Year of Peace. Operating within the framework of the theme, "To Safeguard Peace and the Future of Humanity", the program for this special year was composed of the three primary components: Peace and Disarmament, Peace and Development and Preparation for Life in Peace. Cristóbal Gabarrón is a celebrated Spanish artist known for his work with the United Nations whose personal convictions are based on the individual human life, and the coexistence and the development of human values. Artist statement: “There is nothing as pure and innocent as a child’s creative imagination. Children are the future of our societies. We learn a lot from each other when interacting across generations and cultures on such issues that bind us together, such as human rights,” Artist bio - Cristóbal Gabarrón was born in the town of Mula (Murcia) in 1945, although at the age of six he moved with his family to live in Valladolid. He dedicated himself to painting from a very young age performing his first exhibitions, at the Galería Castilla de Valladolid and at the Galería Macarrón in Madrid. His work evolved from figuration to informalism, to the abstracción "symbolic and "postmodern," a "symbolic." In 1967, at the age of 22, Gabarrón exhibited at the Leob Gallery in New York and the Arts Perspective Gallery in Paris. His work has been marked by his life experience, humanism and his nomadic personality, which give him a unique, very personal style. A creation in continuous experimentation and evolution with strokes from its multiple rooms and exhibitions in different parts of the world. He currently resides between Bueu, on the Ria de Pontevedra and Valladolid, although he continues to be connected to his place of origin, the city of Mula. He received his first artistic training in Valladolid before continuing his career in France, Italy and the United States. Gabarrón's work is focused on his interest in humanism, for people's lives in harmony with their natural environment, for their peaceful coexistence and the development of human values. Their collaboration with international organizations, such as the International Olympic Committee or the United Nations, has led to a very fruitful period that lasts, following the exhibition of the Universe of Light (Enlightened Universe) inaugurated on 24 October 2015 at the famous Central Park in New York, by the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon on the 70th Anniversary of the creation of the United Nations and which every year travels cities from all over the world, to commemorate UN and Human Rights Day: Geneva (2016), Amsterdam (2017), Brussels (2018), Valladolid (2020), La Valeta (2022). His work has been the same center of analysis within retrospectives such as those dedicated to the Chelsea Art Museum, the IVAM, the Museum of Modern Art of Gdansk, in Poland, the National Museum of Art of China in Shanghai, or the Herrerian Patio Museum of Contemporary Spanish Art...

"Untitled" George Condo, Abstract Figurative Contemporary Blue-Chip Artist
By George Condo
Located in New York, NY
George Condo Untitled, 1994 Signed and dated on the stretcher Oil on canvas 10 5/8 x 6 1/2 inches Provenance: Maurice Lefebvre-Foinet, Paris Thence by descent, Private Collection, France Christie's, Paris, Intérieurs, September 29, 2010, Lot 198 Private Collection (acquired at the above sale) Phillips, "Desktop: Online Auction", April 15-23, 2020, Lot 33 In the 1980's, George Condo, born in Concord, New Hampshire, arrived in New York, after having been in California, and became close friends with members of Andy Warhol's Factory including Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. He collaborated with the heroes of the Beat Generation, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. Of this time, it was written: "His work was governed by the reworking of the Old Masters, in a lyric universe in which the human being is decomposed in a multiplicity of non-human beings merged from his own unconsciousness: 'I conceive artistic language as my own natural reactions, a combination of rational and irrational.' " (denoirmont) He worked together successfully with Burroughs, which included a visit to Burroughs in Lawrence, Kansas. Condo said: "We both disintegrated in each other's presence and became a third being." However, each retained their individuality as well with Condo contributing a cartoon aspect to their conceptual sculpture of layered images. Though his work, qualified as a "figurative abstraction", it is quite impossible to determinate a frontier between representation and abstraction, between academic art and avant-garde, between popular imagery and High Art. His female figures are described as ferocious and highly aggressive types and are intended to dispel any sense of submissiveness or timidity. Condo, who remains known primarily for his cartoon-like portraits has also turned to sculpture with works that include jazz themes---monumental stainless steel letters spelling out the names of music legends like Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. His sculptural works also include abstract bronzes and 32 busts of invented deities, a group of works inspired by the 9-11 terrorist attacks. George Condo was raised in a family where the father was a math and physics professor. For two years, he attended the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, where his father taught, and taking art history classes, became very enamored with Caravaggio and other Old Masters. He later did paintings that he called fake Old Masters, which had elements of abstraction and unique treatment that got the attention of younger artists. While in college, he also played bass guitar with a punk rock group called the Girls, and landed in New York City because of a music "gig". However, in 1981, he moved to Los Angeles, and became friends with Roger Herman, a local artist. Herman's influence led to gallery representation and some sales, but by the mid 1980s, Condo was back in New York, the place he perceived as the center of action, and was offered gallery shows. From that time, his career has been a success underscored by special recognition such as receiving in 1999 the Academy Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; the release in 2000 of a feature film titled Condo Paintings, directed by John McNaughton; and a visiting lectureship at Harvard University. He also has stirred big-time controversy such as in England in 2006, when he entered a portrait painting of Queen Elizabeth...
