Born in Great Saughall in Cheshire in 1850, George Frederick Nicholls subsequently lived in Worcestershire and Oxfordshire. Many of his paintings are of the Cotswolds and Oxford, and he is best known for his topographical paintings. He painted the illustrations for a series of county books for A & C Black, including Cornwall (1915) and Cotswolds (1920). He died in Chester in 1935.
