Georges Briard Serveware, Ceramics, Silver and Glass

Artist and designer Georges Briard (1917–2005) — a name that has for more than a century been a marker of spectacular and stylish vintage glassware, serveware and other household objects — was born Jascha Brojdo in Russian Ukraine.

Brojdo grew up in Poland and moved to the United States in the 1930s, studying art at the University of Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he began hand-painting metal serving trays while working for Max Wille of M. Wille Company, where Wille suggested changing his name to distinguish his commercial work from his fine art.

As Georges Briard, Brojdo created award-winning designs for items including glasses, trays, coffeepots and dishes in materials like glass, ceramics, metal and wood; he even created gold-plated serveware. His serveware was especially popular from the 1950s to ’70s. It was produced by companies including Culver, Pfaltzgraff and Mdina Glass and sold at high-end department stores like Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller. His designs have a signature opulence, evoking the mid-century modern aesthetic of his time as well as borrowing elements from Art Nouveau and Venetian styles, while the quirky, playful barware pieces he produced featured peacock feathers, skulls and tennis balls.

With colorful, intricate patterns and motifs such as butterflies, Christmas trees and Piet Mondrian-esque geometric abstractions, Georges Briard glasses and dishes were found in the homes of the most fashionable hosts of the mid-century. Today, they are highly prized by collectors.

After serving in the U.S. Army throughout World War II he moved to New York and began painting metal serving trays signing them Brodjo. (quite a nice find for a collector). He was hired by his friend Max Wille, to create designs for the M. Wille Company, who came up with the name Georges Briard to mark commercial pieces. Brodjo was also a painter and would use his real name on his art pieces. As Georges Briard, Brodjo became an American award-winning designer, his designs stocked at high end department stores, such as Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller. He was born Jakub Brojdo but changed his name to Jascha upon moving to Chicago in 1937 where he attended the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA. During WWII he served on General George S. Patton’s staff as an interpreter. He ended up in New York after his discharge from the Army and began working with a friend, Max Willie, from art school. It was Willie who suggested the name George Briard for his hand painted serving trays he began making and selling, and who first produced his commercial products. After painting trays for a time, he moved on to buying glassware blanks from Libbey and Anchor Hocking and embellishing them with his designs, most times in 22-karot gold. He soon learned he could license his name to those companies as well as other companies to create his designs for him. His creations became highly popular through the 1950s to 1970s. During those years you could find his name on everything from glass, to ceramic, metal, or wood and on trays, coffee pots, dishes, and more. They were offered for sale in high end department stores such as Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller. In 2004 he was awarded the Frank S. Child Lifetime Achievement Award by The Society of Glass and Ceramic Decorators. George or rather Jascha or maybe it’s Jakub passed away a year later in New York at the age of 88. His work has become sought after by collectors and his nom de plume has become a mid-century Icon. Cocktail hour will never be the same once you own a vintage George Briard ice...
