In this painting, coupled with an image from The Eyes of Laura Mars, is a reference to ideological possession and the use of compelled speech. It is a concern towards those who display totalitarian traits in their quest for justice, too caught up in their own righteousness to really consider the damage they are doing. This painting represents separate realities, separate experiences and separate interpretations. There is a disconnect and that disconnect provides room for error. The women dominate the foreground of the composition but their body language, the fact that they are all turned away, makes it so they are both the subject and anonymous voyeurs. The viewer is curious as to who they are but also wonders what they are looking at. It stimulates the viewer's desire by providing multiple levels of the unknown. The pairing of the two films that make up this painting, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Blood and Black Lace show several discrepancies between realities. In this painting alone, the viewer sees a cool-toned, female-dominant, more bourgeoisie space with fashionable women that would need to cross a dark, ambiguous landscape in order to enter a warm, male space. Both sexes/classes feel foreign to each other, with no way of better understanding each other lest they choose to cross into the unknown.
