Guilherme Licurgo Photography
Brazilian, b. 1983
Guilherme Licurgo was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1983 and is currently residing and working in São Paulo, Brazil. In 2011, he was personally invited by Olivier Van Doorne, President and Worldwide Creative Director at Select NY, to work on his first major international advertising book project, side by side with Steven Klein, Johan Renck, Lori Goldstein and Sean Spellman. Also in 2011, he was prizewinner by the Brazilian Foreign Office as one of the best contemporary artists of Brazil, at the II Itamaraty Contest of Contemporary Art. In 2014, he was awarded by Visionaire, the highly collectable, multi-format, luxury art and fashion publication based in New York City, with one of the pictures from his Desert Flower Project. In 2015, he was invited to make a solo show with two installations at the SP Art Fair. His most recent work includes a book project and an exhibition with the world-renowned Martha Graham Dance Company. Guilherme believes photography should inspire, rejoice, transport us to a memory undated. That passion is reflected in every aspect of his work. As Yousuf Karsh, one of the masters of 20th-century photography, and Gui's icons, best said, "Look and think before opening the shutter. The heart and mind are the true lenses of the camera."

As a result of his cultivated critical eye, the photographer sheds light on the historical exclusion of the Brazilian population in decision-making processes in the country.
Dramatically plunged into an endless political and economic crisis, Brazil finds itself in a chaotic situation. In this context, Guilherme Licurgo's new series gains even more relevance with the proximity of the presidential elections, taking as its starting point the widespread sense of absence of dialogue between the citizens and government, even more, sensitive in this period. In the photographer's words: “'Manifesto' is the dialectic between the individual and the collective.
