Henredon Buffets

American

Founded in 1945, Henredon is one of the more recently minted of the top-tier North Carolina furniture makers. Among collectors, Henredon is admired both for its sleek, sexy sofas, dining tables and other furniture of the 1970s and for its partnerships with noted designers, a program that began in the 1950s with decorating icon Dorothy Draper and architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

From the start, Henredon has been best known for its bedroom furniture and vintage case pieces, such as cabinets, dressers, armoires and credenzas. The brand was established in Morganton by former Drexel Furniture Company executives, and its name is a portmanteau term, derived from the first names of three of the company’s founders — T. Henry Wilson, Ralph Edwards and Don VanNoppen. (Sterling Collett, a fourth figure mentioned in Henredon Furniture’s history, chaired the company and served as treasurer).

Though not on the cutting edge stylistically, Henredon’s production — as well as its output under the Heritage-Henredon label — has always kept pace with contemporary tastes.

In 1953, High Point manufacturer Heritage began a collaboration with Dorothy Draper, famed for bravura interior design commissions such as the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco and the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. Her taste for bold, modernized historical style is reflected in the incised baroque medallions of her España line and the geometric motif of her Viennese furnishings group. In 1955, Henredon launched the Taliesin Ensemble by Wright, named after the architect’s houses in Wisconsin and Arizona. Taliesin dressers and coffee tables are recognizable by their angular shapes and a dentil motif on their edges. In those years, Henredon had a cross-licensing agreement with Heritage, and Draper and Wright's furniture is usually labeled Heritage-Henredon.

In later decades, Henredon produced collections for such designers as Ralph Lauren and Laura Ashley. The company took a stylish turn in the 1970s, fabricating new and unusual forms like mirrored room dividers and console tables with rounded corners and burl-wood veneers. Such pieces are priced in the $3,000 to $4,000 range, as are chests of drawers by Draper. Wright furniture tends toward the higher end, priced around $7,000. Henredon was an aesthetically diverse maker, but its furniture commands attention and makes a statement in any eclectic decor.

The vintage Henredon furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes bedroom furniture, coffee tables, chairs and other pieces.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A Henredon cabinet is a case good made by the American furniture manufacturer, founded in 1945. The company was especially well known for producing wooden cupboards and cabinets for their own brand and for other designers like Laura Ashley and Ralph Lauren. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Henredon cabinets.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
To identify Henredon furniture, search for the maker's mark. Once you've confirmed that your piece is a Henredon, use trusted online resources to determine its age and collection. If you need assistance, enlist the help of a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antiques dealer. Find an assortment of Henredon furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
To identify Henredon furniture, search for the maker's mark. It usually appears on the bottoms of couches, chairs and tables and along the top edges or back of cabinets and other case goods. Depending on the age of the piece, the mark may read "Henredon Fine Furniture," "Henredon," or "Heritage Henredon." Many pieces also display the name of the collection that the piece originates from, and you can cross-reference this information with trusted online resources to determine the approximate age of the furniture. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable antiques dealer may also be of help when identifying pieces. On 1stDibs, find a wide range of Henredon furniture.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024
To tell if Henredon furniture is real, search the item for a maker's mark, usually found in an inconspicuous area, such as along the edges, backs and bottoms. Most Henredon furniture will display a maker's marking. These marks have evolved over the years with wording including "Henredon Fine Furniture," "Henredon" and "Heritage Henredon," and sometimes they also displayed a date of manufacture or collection name. You can use these markings to assess the authenticity of a piece in two ways. First, you can compare the maker's markings on your item to images published in trusted online resources to confirm a match. Secondly, you can research the year, style name and maker wording to determine if they are accurate and reflective of your piece. Alternatively, you can have a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer perform the authentication process for you. Shop a collection of Henredon furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2024
To identify a Henredon sofa, look for the maker's mark, usually found on the bottom of the frame beneath the seats on the left side. If the marking says Henredon Fine Furniture, it likely dates back to the period between 1945 and 1970. If a piece simply says Henredon Furniture, it will typically be newer. In some cases, the marking may also specify the line of furniture that the sofa comes from. You can use the estimated age and line information, if present, to conduct online research and learn more about your sofa. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer will also be able to assist with identification. Find a variety of Henredon furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
