Henredon Wardrobes and Armoires

American

Founded in 1945, Henredon is one of the more recently minted of the top-tier North Carolina furniture makers. Among collectors, Henredon is admired both for its sleek, sexy sofas, dining tables and other furniture of the 1970s and for its partnerships with noted designers, a program that began in the 1950s with decorating icon Dorothy Draper and architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

From the start, Henredon has been best known for its bedroom furniture and vintage case pieces, such as cabinets, dressers, armoires and credenzas. The brand was established in Morganton by former Drexel Furniture Company executives, and its name is a portmanteau term, derived from the first names of three of the company’s founders — T. Henry Wilson, Ralph Edwards and Don VanNoppen. (Sterling Collett, a fourth figure mentioned in Henredon Furniture’s history, chaired the company and served as treasurer).

Though not on the cutting edge stylistically, Henredon’s production — as well as its output under the Heritage-Henredon label — has always kept pace with contemporary tastes.

In 1953, High Point manufacturer Heritage began a collaboration with Dorothy Draper, famed for bravura interior design commissions such as the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco and the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. Her taste for bold, modernized historical style is reflected in the incised baroque medallions of her España line and the geometric motif of her Viennese furnishings group. In 1955, Henredon launched the Taliesin Ensemble by Wright, named after the architect’s houses in Wisconsin and Arizona. Taliesin dressers and coffee tables are recognizable by their angular shapes and a dentil motif on their edges. In those years, Henredon had a cross-licensing agreement with Heritage, and Draper and Wright's furniture is usually labeled Heritage-Henredon.

In later decades, Henredon produced collections for such designers as Ralph Lauren and Laura Ashley. The company took a stylish turn in the 1970s, fabricating new and unusual forms like mirrored room dividers and console tables with rounded corners and burl-wood veneers. Such pieces are priced in the $3,000 to $4,000 range, as are chests of drawers by Draper. Wright furniture tends toward the higher end, priced around $7,000. Henredon was an aesthetically diverse maker, but its furniture commands attention and makes a statement in any eclectic decor.

The vintage Henredon furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes bedroom furniture, coffee tables, chairs and other pieces.

Marvelous Late 20th Century Modern to Art Deco Revival Entertainment Arbus Armoire 6000 Series by Henredon composed of 2 piece top & lower sections with book matched burl wood frames, cast bronze pulls, 2 removeable & adjustable wood shelves, and 4 drawers. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, Top removable shelf has some flaws from use so its top was sanded and painted black, but it is above eye level so will never be seen. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Late 20th Century. NOTE: If you love this Henredon Arbus 6000 Series Entertainment Armoire Cabinet we have other matching pieces listed for sale separately here if they are still available. Hello there!!! My, what a HANDSOME HENREDON cabinet!!! Folks, there are plenty of cabinets in this world BUT every now and then (And NOT very often!) you come across an EXTRORDINARY vintage Henredon piece like this and it simply takes your breath away!!!! WOW!!! This is a STUNNING Entertainment Arbus Armoire 6000 Series by Henredon Furniture composed of two pieces, an upper and lower section with each of these sections comprised of beautiful book matched burl wood frames bearing a SPECTACULAR starburst pattern illuminating from behind the lovely cast bronze handles that meet in the upper & lower corners of each of the four doors. The doors open to reveal an inside storage space with two removeable & adjustable wood shelves in the center of each section and two fixed wood shelves, one created by the cabinet connection and the other in the lower section above four drawers with carved handle pulls. So, technically you have four shelves to use for storage!! The cabinet features upper and lower audio/video ventilated knockouts (that have never been knocked out,) and has two small circular convenient cord cut outs on the lower left corner of each section AND it comes with electrical supply cords. If you use it as an entertainment center or cabinet simply take out the removeable shelves and you have the perfect place for a large television, computer or monitor, gaming components, & other electronic supplies. Or use it with one or both wood shelves and create plenty of organized storage space for games, movies, books, or even a turntable and some records & vinyl!! Maybe you choose to place it in your bedroom or dressing area utilized as an armoire or wardrobe and fill it with clothing, shoes, and accessories. This cabinet is SUPER versatile!!! It stands BOLD & BEAUTIFULLY upon a slightly recessed base and exudes an incredible Modern to Art Deco Revival presence sure to make a transformative statement in whatever room it occupies!!!! And just a reminder to look at the measurements because this piece is monumental in both style and size!!! Henredon Furniture Company was founded in 1945 in Morganton, North Carolina by four Drexel Heritage executives; T. Henry Wilson, Ralph Edwards, Donnell VanOppen, and Sterling Collet. The name Henredon is a combination of their names. These four men were determined to build furniture of custom exceptional quality, and their original offering was only three chests. Through the years they engaged with well-known designers to create their unique and fine furniture with iconic names such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Ralph Lauren, Dorothy Draper, and Laura Ashley. The company changed ownership several times throughout the years, eventually becoming Heritage Home Group (HHG) in 1986. Then, the original manufacturing operations in North Carolina effectively ceased the brand name around 2013. Following that, HHG, the last parent company under the original model filed bankruptcy in 2018 and the brand name was purchased by Authentic Brands Group (ABG.) While no longer in production, Henredon furnishings are highly sought after superior vintage...

Questions About Henredon Wardrobes and Armoires
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A Henredon cabinet is a case good made by the American furniture manufacturer, founded in 1945. To identify a Henredon sofa, look for the maker's mark, usually found on the bottom of the frame beneath the seats on the left side. If the marking says Henredon Fine Furniture, it likely dates back to the period between 1945 and 1970. If a piece simply says Henredon Furniture, it will typically be newer. In some cases, the marking may also specify the line of furniture that the sofa comes from. You can use the estimated age and line information, if present, to conduct online research and learn more about your sofa. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer will also be able to assist with identification. Find a variety of Henredon furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024
To tell if Henredon furniture is real, search the item for a maker's mark, usually found in an inconspicuous area, such as along the edges, backs and bottoms. Most Henredon furniture will display a maker's marking. These marks have evolved over the years with wording including "Henredon Fine Furniture," "Henredon" and "Heritage Henredon," and sometimes they also displayed a date of manufacture or collection name. You can use these markings to assess the authenticity of a piece in two ways. First, you can compare the maker's markings on your item to images published in trusted online resources to confirm a match. Secondly, you can research the year, style name and maker wording to determine if they are accurate and reflective of your piece. Alternatively, you can have a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer perform the authentication process for you. Shop a collection of Henredon furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
