Henry Clarence Pitz Art

American, 1895-1976

Henry Clarence Pitz was an outstanding performer in several fields, including illustrating for magazines and books, teaching and lecturing, writing on art subjects, painting and exhibiting. His talents appeared early; while still in high school in Philadelphia, he won a scholarship to study at the Philadelphia Museum and School of Industrial Art, and then went on to Spring Garden College. Among his teachers were Walter Everett and Maurice Bower. Although Pitz experimented with, and worked in, almost every medium, he had a special affinity for line drawing and book illustration. He illustrated more than 160 books, as well as for a whole range of magazines from The Saturday Evening Post to St. Nicholas. Among his many popular art books were: Pen, Brush and Ink, The Practice of Illustration, Drawing Trees, Ink Drawing Techniques, and Illustrating Children’s Books. Pitz exhibited nationally and internationally, winning numerous awards. His work is represented in many public collections, including the Library of Congress in Washington, D. C., and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Pitz served as director of the illustration course at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art and was a visiting lecturer and instructor to many schools in the area. He was also a contributing editor of American Artist magazine.

View of a Mansion in the South of France, a drawing by Claude-Joseph Vernet

By Claude-Joseph Vernet

Located in PARIS, FR

We would like to thank Madame Beck-Saiello for confirming the autograph nature of this drawing after an in-person examination. It was probably during an excursion in the countryside near Avignon that Claude-Joseph Vernet executed this drawing, enhanced with pen and brown ink, depicting a mansion on a hilltop overlooking a small village with geometric shapes. 1. Joseph Vernet, a painter influenced by Italy Claude-Joseph Vernet was born in Avignon in 1714, the son of Antoine Vernet (1689-1753), an artisan painter of architectural decorations, coach panels, and the like. He moved to the studio of Philippe Sauvan (1697-1792), a leading history painter in Avignon, and then worked with Jacques Viali (active 1681-1745), a decorative, landscape, and marine painter in Aix-en-Provence. Vernet's first recorded paintings were decorative overdoors executed in 1731 in the Aix townhouse of the marquise de Simiane. In 1734, Joseph de Seytres, marquis de Caumont, a leading amateur in Avignon, sponsored Vernet to make a study trip to Italy to complete his artistic education and to draw antiquities for his patron. As Avignon was a papal territory in Vernet's day, he also had a number of useful introductions among influential churchmen when he arrived in Rome. Vernet was soon at home in the French community there, and he was encouraged by Nicolas Vleughels (1668-1737), director of the Académie de France in Rome, even though the young painter had no official affiliation with the royal institution. He likely entered the studio of the French marine painter Adrien Manglard...

Done in a manner that recalls Romare Bearden. The artist Loren Munk (born 1951) is primarily known for his YouTube nickname James Kalm as an uploader of videos about New York exhibitions, amongst others. He presents himself as a maker of contemporary paintings for several decades and of cubist paintings of urban imagery. Munk has received accolades for his drawings and mosaics. He differs from traditional mosaic artists by the manner in which he incorporates glass into his decorative paintings. His unique and innovative use of materials such as mirror, gold-leaf and glass mosaic affirmed him as a founding force of Kitsch Art and a leading member of New York Neo-Expressionism. Munk's work debuted in SoHo in 1981 with a double show at J. Fields Gallery and Gabrielle Bryers. Since then, he has overseen an international career. In addition to exhibiting in Brazil, France, Germany and the United States, Munk has received national and overseas, public and private commissions. He is well represented in important collections throughout Europe, South and North America and the Middle East. Most recently, Munk has been producing a series of paintings which tackle the subject of art itself through a historical and diagrammatic lens. Munk documents the New York art world in YouTube videos, using the name James Kalm.
