Spanish, 1913-2003
Ignacio Gil Sala, was a painter, bohemian character, adventurous and intrepid traveler who knew how to capture his eyes to that world with his painting. After starting his artistic training at the age of nine, Gil Sala entered the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he had as teachers Felix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. Already in 1930, being still almost an apprentice, he obtained the bronze medal of the School, and in 1936 he won by contest a scholarship to make a study trip through Spain. Those were the difficult moments of the outbreak of the Civil War and thanks to the help of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure, he was able to complete his artistic training. Throughout his life Ignacio Gil dedicated himself to travel both in the Peninsula and in different Islamic and Latin American countries. He exhibited his work in Spain, France, the Philippines, Switzerland, the United States, Canada and Colombia, among many other countries. Extraordinary draftsman, agile handling pencil and charcoal, Ignacio Gil immortalized landscapes of all Spain, fishing ports of the Mediterranean, different European cities, etc., all expressed through a resounding brushstroke and a studied color. The Insular Council of the Balearic Islands awarded him an award for the numerous times he immortalized the lands, the people and the sea of Ibiza.

Ibiza Children in White Village Mediterranean Figurative Oil Painting Spain Artist: Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913–2003) Title: Traditional Ibizan Scene with Children Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 60 × 73 cm (23.6 × 28.7 in) Signature: Signed lower right Date: circa 1960s Condition: Very good original condition with visible impasto brushwork Frame: Unframed Provenance: Private collection Spain DESCRIPTION Expressive Mediterranean figurative oil painting depicting children and women in a traditional whitewashed Ibizan village setting by Spanish post-Impressionist painter Ignacio Gil Sala. This composition belongs to the artist’s celebrated Ibiza cycle, widely considered the most recognizable and desirable body of his work. The scene captures the luminous atmosphere of Balearic daily life through confident impasto brushwork and vibrant structural color patches characteristic of mid-century Mediterranean painting. Particularly notable is the treatment of the children’s faces, constructed with dense chromatic strokes that create a strong sense of immediacy and psychological presence. The architecture, rendered in layered whites and violet shadows, reflects the intense island light that defines Gil Sala’s mature Ibiza production. Works featuring traditional Ibizan figures remain among the most collected subjects within the artist’s oeuvre, especially in medium-to-large decorative formats such as the present example. A highly atmospheric and authentic representation of Mediterranean village life. Signed lower right. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913–2003) was a Spanish painter associated with the Mediterranean post-Impressionist tradition of the twentieth century. He trained at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona under the guidance of Félix Mestres and Vicente Borrás and developed a career focused primarily on luminous landscapes and traditional figurative scenes of Ibiza, Mallorca and southern Spain. Following the Spanish Civil War, Ibiza became one of the central subjects of his artistic production. The island’s white architecture, traditional costumes and intense Mediterranean light provided the visual structure for many of his most recognizable compositions. Works from his Ibiza period are considered the most characteristic and desirable within his oeuvre and are especially appreciated for their atmospheric brushwork and chromatic construction. Gil Sala exhibited internationally across Europe and the Americas, and today his Mediterranean scenes remain widely collected as part of the twentieth-century Spanish figurative painting tradition. His work stands within the lineage of painters who explored Mediterranean light through color structure and expressive brushwork alongside Joaquín Sorolla, Hermen Anglada-Camarasa and Eliseu Meifrèn. ARTIST CONTEXT / INSPIRATION The luminous Mediterranean palette connects Ignacio Gil Sala with the tradition of Joaquín Sorolla’s coastal figuration and the Balearic chromatic research developed by Hermen Anglada-Camarasa during his Mallorca period. His structured brushwork and atmospheric construction also relate to the post-Impressionist landscape language of Eliseu Meifrèn and the broader European Mediterranean painting tradition collected internationally throughout the twentieth century. Till the Clouds Roll By 1945 Frank Sinatra Mid Century Modern Hollywood Film WPA TILL THE COULDS ROLL BY (Film Set), oil on canvas, 20 x 24 inches signed “Richard Whorf” lower right and signed and dated on the verso “R. Whorf/ Dec. 21, 1945. Frame by Hendenryk. ABOUT THE PAINTING This painting is from the collection of Barbara and Frank Sinatra, dated December 21, 1945 (just nine days after Frank Sinatra’s 30th birthday), and depicts the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Culver City backlot during the filming of Till the Clouds Roll By, the direction of the film having been taking over by Richard Whorf in December 1945. It is not presently clear if Whorf gave the Sinatras this painting as a gift, as the presence of the Dalzell Hatfield Galleries label on the verso indicates the painting may have been sourced there. Frank and Nancy Sinatra acquired a number of works from Dalzell Hatfield Galleries during the 1940’s, or perhaps they framed it for the couple. Sinatra performed “Old Man River’ in the film. Sinatra and June Allyson are depicted in the center of the painting. PROVENANCE From the Estate of Mrs. Nancy Sinatra; Dalzell Hatfield Galleries, Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles. An image of the Dalzell Hatfield label and the back of the original frame (which we replaced with a stunning Heydenrk frame) are attached. Nancy Sinatra was Fran's first wife. Nancy Rose Barbato was 17 years old when she met Frank Sinatra, an 18-year-old singer from Hoboken, on the Jersey Shore in the summer of 1934. They married in 1939 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Jersey City where Frank gave Nancy a recording of a song dedicated to her titled "Our Love" as a wedding present. The young newlyweds lived and worked in New Jersey, where Frank worked as an unknown singing waiter and master of ceremonies at the Rustic Cabin while Nancy worked as a secretary at the American Type Founders. Introducing "Scandinavian Winter Landscape, 1907" a mesmerizing painting by the artist Arthur Percy Carlsson, later known as Arthur C:son Percy (1886-1976). Born in Vickleby, Öland, Percy's artistic journey was one defined by unwavering determination and exceptional talent. This landscape painting presents a winter landscape, likely set during the early spring season. The canvas portrays a vast, snow-filled meadow, blanketed in pristine white. Above, the sky comes alive in a captivating pointillist style, with hues of blue, turquoise, and yellow forming delicate, scattered dots, while small clouds grace the horizon. The scene unfolds with an enchanting backdrop of a distant forest, its trees adorned with a touch of winter's charm. Between the enchanting forest and the expansive meadow, a few humble houses...
