This serie of Porthole Fragments (#14, 38, 43, 18) is a high-contrast chromatic composition structured through layered acrylic planes, where saturated colours define a central volumetric form that shifts with light and perspective. The work is studying the Cubist principles while using geometrical forms and vivid colors. In the Surfacing Forms serie, J.Margulis explores the boundaries between two-dimensional surfaces and three dimensional space. Influenced by the Kinetic Art movement of Venezuela, J.Margulis constructs these works using meticulously layered acrylic sheets that act as "light traps." As the viewer moves, the geometric patterns shift, vibrate, and evolve, offering a meditative experience that challenges the stability of perception. Each work serves as a window into a rhythmic world of color and depth, where light itself becomes the final medium that completes the work. Constructed from painted, faceted slats set at precise angles, Margulis’s reliefs contain multiple compositions within a single structure. The works remain static while the image shifts with the viewer, revealing changing arrangements of color and form. Born in Venezuela, Margulis engages the country’s rich history of kinetic and perceptual art, associated with artists such as Carlos Cruz-Diez and Jesús Rafael Soto. Through complex surfaces and an expansive chromatic vocabulary, Surfacing Forms explores perception as fluid, spatial, and dependent on the viewer’s movement.
