Dimensions - H: 29 1/2 in W: 46 in D: 23 3/4 in A sophisticated French Louis XVI style ebonized writing desk by Bodart, dating to circa 1955–1965, showcasing the refined Neoclassical design and exceptional decorative craftsmanship for which French furniture of this period is celebrated. The desk combines a dramatic black ebonized finish with finely applied brass mounts, gilt-bronze ornament, and an impressive embossed leather writing surface, creating a striking piece that bridges traditional French design with the more glamorous sensibility of mid-century interiors. The rectangular top is fitted with a rich black leather writing surface, beautifully embossed and decorated with an intricate gilt-tooled border. The subtle tooling provides an elegant contrast against the deep black ground while emphasizing the architectural geometry of the Louis XVI form. A molded edge surrounds the top, with additional brass detailing highlighting the perimeter and giving the desk a particularly luxurious appearance. Below the top is a beautifully organized arrangement of five hand-crafted dovetailed drawers, including two drawers on each side and a larger central drawer. Each drawer front is outlined with delicate gilt-brass trim and fitted with decorative brass pulls. The central drawer is particularly distinctive, featuring an elaborate Louis XVI-style gilt-bronze escutcheon and ring pull, incorporating a classical ribbon-tied bow and foliate ornament (it has a faux key drawer pull). The combination of restrained geometric drawer fronts and elaborate ormolu hardware is characteristic of the Louis XVI aesthetic, where architectural symmetry is balanced by finely rendered decorative details. The desk is further elevated by its architectural base. The corners are defined by fluted and tapered pilaster-style supports, while the slender, tapered legs terminate in small brass feet. Brass collars at the transition between the legs and case provide another layer of detail and visually connect the gilt-metal elements throughout the piece. The ebonized finish gives the desk a dramatic, almost architectural presence, while the warm brass and gilt-bronze accents add depth and contrast. The reverse is finished and decorated as well, allowing the desk to be positioned beautifully within a room rather than necessarily against a wall. Its relatively compact proportions and generous writing surface make it exceptionally versatile for a home office, library, study, executive office, bedroom, dressing room, or designer workspace. It would also make a particularly impressive writing desk or statement occasional desk in a sophisticated interior. By Bodart, this desk exemplifies the enduring appeal of French Louis XVI inspired furniture produced during the mid-20th century. The combination of ebonized wood, embossed leather, gilt-brass outlining, hand-crafted dovetailed drawers, fluted legs, and finely detailed ormolu hardware gives the piece a distinctly luxurious character while maintaining the clean symmetry associated with French Neoclassical design. A wonderful choice for collectors and interior designers seeking French antique-style furniture, Louis XVI desks, ebonized furniture, leather-top writing desks, or French Neoclassical office furniture, this Bodart desk...
