Jaena Kwon Paintings

Drawing on her background in origami and the production of pop-up books, painter and sculptor Jaena Kwon works in abstract mode, and prioritizes structure and texture in her work. In exploring how space is depicted in paintings, she creates compelling monochrome layered objects that are folded, sanded and painted.

Kwon was born and raised in Seoul and holds two MFA degrees. She completed one in 2014 at Yale University, where she majored in painting and printmaking, and the other in 2012 at Seoul National University, where she also earned her bachelor’s degree.

Central to Kwon’s art, regardless of whether she is working with fiberboard, wood, gesso or acrylics, is a careful, deliberate focus on the tactile qualities of the work. In doing so, she adds another dimension, adding a layer of experience and meaning.

Of Kwon’s many exhibitions, most include group and solo shows held in New York City or Seoul. A 2017 residency at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, as well as 2012 shows at Amy Simon Fine Art in Connecticut and New Caledonia Hotel Art Fair in Noumea are among some exceptions. The Woosuk Exhibition Hall at Seoul National University has featured Kwon twice in back-to-back group shows in 2010 and 2011, and she was also a participant in 2017’s “Passion. Connected. 100 x 100” at the Korean Cultural Center of New York.

Kwon has won numerous awards including a Teaching Assistant Fellowship in 2011 from Seoul National University. She also won the Carol Schlosberg Memorial Prize from Yale University and the Boston Young Contemporaries RGH Prize, both in 2014.

Nocturnal Parts - abstract geometric contemporary modern painting relief
Located in Doetinchem, NL
Nocturnal Parts is a unique one-of-a-kind contemporary modern painting relief by Dutch artist Sander Martijn Jonker. It is a relief consisting of two open spherical parts with an intriguing matte black finish, perhaps a bit mysterious but very beautifully made. It can be hanged in two different ways, with the opening between the two spherical elements either facing away or facing the observer. Depending where the light comes from one might decide for the one or the other hanging method. Sander Martijn Jonker (1977, Netherlands) graduated from the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. He primarily makes three-dimensional reliefs that play with the tension between abstraction and representation, surface and space. Light, shadow and their elusive ever-changing properties play an important role. Although the resulting works are abstract, he uses everyday reality as a starting and/or reference point. His work is created through forms of manipulation, distortion, repetition and simplification. Some works arise from the repetition of a simple movement or form, others are made by exploring how far he can go with the deformation and manipulation of the material, after which he captures and preserves the shape. He experiences daily life as uncontrollable and at times confusing. In order to cope with that, he is always looking for patterns and has gradually developed various rituals and ways of control, hoping they can offer him certainty and reassurance. His work and person are inextricably connected. He makes the things he makes because he doesn’t have a choice. He is trying to get a grip...

Collaged Geometric Disc Mobile - Abstract, Colourful, Canvas and Board Mobile

Dynamic and whimsical, Aron Hill’s mobile is a joyful contemporary kinetic sculpture. Three separate discs are covered in a curated collage of shapes and brilliant colours. The colour profile here is Hill’s characteristically vivid palette-- orange, yellow, blue, red, and green punctuated by black and white. Delicately balanced, the sculpture moves in the air redefining the space and affording the viewer a fresh ‘view’. Mobiles have existed for millennia—at first as windchimes, then re-imagined by Russian sculptors...

The Quiet Breath
By Louise Blyton
Located in Phoenix, AZ
b. Melbourne, Australia Louise Blyton is a reductive artist exploring the romance of raw linen and dry pigment. The artist’s geometrically shaped canvases explore color, light, and form through the visual language of Reductivism, an aesthetic style characterized by streamlined compositions, restricted color, and a reduction of form and means. Identifying with Reductivism’s simplicity, Blyton’s shaped canvases and three-dimensional wall sculptures elevate craftsmanship and process, achieving a compositional clarity that unifies color and form. To construct her works, Blyton covers custom built balsa wood stretchers with raw linen, adorning them with layers of pure pigment or acrylic paint. Each pigment reacts differently to raw linen and requires a specific number of coats to reach the artist’s desired level of saturation. As the artist explains, “I’m always looking for a kind of quietness and harmony when making my works even if the color being used is loud.” The artist creates her own spatial dimension by manipulating the shape of the canvas, which escapes from the flat surface of the wall, confusing its role as a painting. “Rather than responding to the architecture they ask particular attributes of the building to act as support,” as some works appear to climb the surface of the walls, while others straddle columns and corners. Louise Blyton lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia in 1988. Her works are held in significant corporate and private collections in Australia, China, France, United Kingdom, Portugal, and the United States. Since 2000, Blyton has run an artist supply store called, St. Luke Artist Colourman, which specializes in professional paint and raw materials, with her husband David Coles.
