PRINCE Photograph Detroit 1980 (Prince Dez Dickerson)
By Leni Sinclair
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Prince & The Revolution Photograph 1980 by Leni Sinclair: Prince alongside his first guitarist Dez Dickerson shot by Leni Sinclair, 2016's Kresge Foundation's Eminent Artist (See The Guardian UK Photo Section, Jan. 28, 2016). Archival inkjet print. 11 x 14 inches. Hand signed, titled & dated in ink across the margins. Some minor corner bending; in otherwise very good overall condition. Obtained directly from artist. Lot 180 is an authorized dealer rep of photographer Leni Sinclair. About Leni Sinclair: Sinclair is a recognized leader of the 1960s-70s counter cultural movement in Detroit, which she amply documented through vivid and dramatic photography. But she may be best known for capturing the raucous rock n’ roll scene of that era, including photographs of such rock legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, and jazz icons such as Miles Davis and Sun Ra...

Dear One Threads A Cocoon - Unique Hand-coloured Print in Walnut frame
Located in London, GB
Hand-coloured portrait of a human larvae bursting out of their cocoon, immobilised in marble. Representative of a safe and isolating space, the cocoon is both a cage and a shelter. This tale is a study of transformation, of breaking apart and coming back together as the larvae emerges from the silken threads. Taken from The Sialia Marbles, a series of portraits containing ephemeral human sculptures taken between 2016-19. Together these works act as tales contained in a fictional sculpture hall, in direct reaction to Andre Malraux’s 1947 Le Musee Imaginaire (Museum Without Walls). During the beginning of the 'Museum Age' in the 18th century , writer Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe discussed mythical sculpture...

Yes, Jean Paul Gaultier is French. He was born in Arcueil, a suburb of Paris, in 1952. He didn't have a formal fashion education, but he loved to sketch and was drawn to clothing, citing the corsets in his maternal grandmother's closet as having a formative impact on his creative direction. Gaultier founded his luxury fashion house in 1982 and unveiled his first collection in 1984. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of Jean Paul Gaultier apparel and accessories.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 29, 2024
Yes, Jean Paul Gaultier is a real person. He is a fashion designer who has created wildly provocative, transformational designs for day dresses, gowns, tops and other garments that draw on numerous influences and boldly merge haute couture with street sensibility. Gaultier began his career in 1970 as an assistant to Pierre Cardin, who admired the sketches the 18-year-old had sent for his appraisal. After Gaultier had his first runway show in 1976, featuring unconventional statements like pairing motorcycle jackets with ballerina skirts, it didn’t take long for his star to rise. In addition to designing under his own label, he created costumes for film and stage. He was nominated for a César Award for Best Costume Design for The City of Lost Children (1995) and then a second for Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element (1997). Gaultier presented his last couture show in 2020, ending his boundary-pushing, industry-shaping reign with a raucous presentation of more than 230 outfits formed from fragments of collections from across his 50-year career. On 1stDibs, find a collection of Jean Paul Gaultier apparel and accessories.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 16, 2024
