A NEW COLLABORATION
Tina West + Tucker Robbins 2020
The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to present a photographic exhibition by Tina West, featuring a special new collaboration between Robin Rice and furniture designer, activist Tucker Robbins. Jessica Kravitz of Exalted Alchemy created an aromatic experience exclusively for the exhibition. The installation was designed by sculpture Amy Pilkington. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2019 from 6pm to 8pm. This is Tina West’s seventh solo exhibition at the Robin Rice Gallery and Tucker Robbins’ first collaboration with Robin Rice.
Inspired of a serendipitous meeting between Robin Rice and Tucker Robbins on a rainy day in New York City, this latest collaboration welcomes an exciting new era at The Robin Rice Gallery. Breaking from the gallery’s traditional style of display, West’s photography will be creatively integrated with Robbins’ artisan furniture. Designed and built on the edge of the forest by indigenous people using centuries-old techniques, these products are born out of Tucker Robbins’ travels to remote locations. Whether woven textile, clay pottery or wood sculpture, these sustainably made products are materials that have been salvaged and refashioned into works of exquisite craftsmanship that are truly one of a kind.
Found objects are essential in the installation. Boosting from an impressive visual flow, the installation discovers intersections between the works that can be seen to echo throughout the space. As West’s “Passion Lies at the Edge of Uncertainty” presents an image composed of dark negative space leading down to a snake skin on the surface below, Robbins’ “Snaka Waka...

As West’s “Passion Lies at the Edge of Uncertainty” presents an image composed of dark negative space leading down to a snake skin on the surface below, Robbins’ “Snaka Waka Table” is an Acadian side-table found nearby that was named by the Bamun carvers of Cameroon who likened its circular design to snake walking. Together, West and Robbins make for an installation that invites audiences to sit down and connect to the fine art objects in a manner different from what they are regularly accustomed to at the Robin Rice Gallery.
In speaking of her influences, West cites Josef Sudek as an early inspiration on her work for how he made evocative black and white photographs out of everyday happenings. Sudek himself once remarked, “I like to tell stories about the life of inanimate objects, to relate something mysterious.” This statement resonates well within West’s own work as she demonstrates a similar gift for finding the beauty in the banality of things overlooked. Her work also shares a kindred spirit with the eccentric assemblages of disparate images made by Joseph Cornell and the experimental platinum prints of Jan Groover...

Calla (Modern Still Life Photograph of Magenta Flower with Green Paint Details)
By Newbold Bohemia
Located in Hudson, NY
Modern still life photograph of magenta calla flowers on a black background with bright green acrylic paint details
Digital C-Print, edition of 10
30 x 30 inches unframed
Newbold Bohemia offers a playful selection of images with his FLOWr series. Bohemia made these compositions by carefully capturing the graceful drips and squirts of bright green acrylic paint around a magenta calla flower submerged in a water tank, which produced a mesmerizing arrangement of color, shape and form. The artist explains that with each image he seeks to “…create not only an image, but an entire world within my image.”
Newbold Bohemia (born 1965, Evansville, Indiana) mainly creates photos, although his work shares as much in common with painting as it does photography. Rather than using the camera to record the world around him, Bohemia prefers to work against the journalistic nature of photography. He creates his own world from scratch. In his studio he arranges still-lifes, builds sets, hires actors, and lights the scene. After capturing the image he often further enhances the work through digital or mechanical manipulation before printing the final work.
Although not formally trained as an artist, his work is heavily influenced by his education and work in psychology, marketing and graphic design. Visual organization and story telling are equally important to Newbold Bohemia, although one may take precedence over another is a particular body of work. His work often focuses on the everyday and mundane, as well as historical and societal references. Tension, conflict, and humor are often introduced to create new ways of seeing the world we think we know.
Newbold Bohemia currently lives and works in Chicago. His award-winning work has been exhibited throughout the United States. He is currently represented by the seller based in Hudson, NY.

ABOUT:
For the last two years Mark and Kristen have collaborated using one of the earliest photographic methods, collodion wet plate to create ambrotypes on glass and tintypes on aluminum. They use a 1860 style view camera to create one-of-a-kind images, which become windows into an intimate, romantic, and beautiful world of faces, still lives, nudes, and landscapes. In this demanding process, the collodion coated tin or glass plates are immersed in a silver nitrate solution, and then they must be exposed in the camera and developed while still wet. Serendipitous flaws and beautiful imperfections are an inevitable part of this imprecise hands-on process.
This show includes a combination of 24 tintypes and ambrotypes, which are 8x10 and smaller in size. Their intimate sizes ask the viewers to look closer and spend more time with these photographs to fully appreciate their power. — A welcome antidote to today's nonstop, ¬instantaneous imagery. Paradoxically, this intersection of past and present gives these pieces an unmistakably contemporary feel. The two collaborators deliberately play up the ambiguity of time.
The nudes (some recalling E.J. Bellocq's alluring portraits of New Orleans prostitutes in 1912) are suffused with freshness and sensuality, even eroticism at times, with nearly all of them coming off as refined rather than crass.
Fredrick Scott...
