"Summer Landscape, " Joseph DeCamp, Boston Ten American Impressionists
By Joseph Rodefer DeCamp
Located in New York, NY
Joseph Rodefer DeCamp (1858 - 1923) Summer Landscape Oil on board 11 x 15 inches Signed lower right Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 5, 1858, Joseph DeCamp began his artistic career in his teens and remained active throughout his life. Although he initially painted landscapes, Decamp became a renowned and respected portraitist. He was famous for his images of men of high society and women within domestic interiors. Decamp began his artistic training in 1873 when he enrolled in the McMicken School of Art and Design in Cincinnati. The head of the school, Thomas Satterwhite Noble, was a European-trained painter whose "insistence on rigorous draftsmanship, true to the academic manner in which he had been trained, exerted a lasting influence on DeCamp." DeCamp studied under Noble for five years, but was also a student of Frank Duveneck at the Ohio Mechanics Institute. He adopted Duveneck's bold, realistic style and many of his paintings executed throughout the 1870s and 1880s reflect this influence. Like most American artists of his generation, DeCamp went abroad to study. In 1878, following in the footsteps of Duveneck and other Midwesterners, he traveled to Munich to attend the Royal Bavarian Academy. Soon after his arrival, however, he gravitated away from the academy and towards Duveneck and eventually followed his mentor to Florence and Venice. During these years, DeCamp focused on landscape and portraiture as his primary subjects. These themes would continue to occupy the artist when he returned to America in 1883. When DeCamp arrived back in the United States in 1883, he first settled in Cincinnati, but soon moved to Cleveland to teach at what is now Case Western Reserve University. He then relocated once more to the Boston area, where he would remain for most of his life. DeCamp began teaching at Wellesley Female Academy and, in the fall of 1885, began as an instructor at the School of Drawing and Painting at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He quickly established himself as one of the leading figures in the Boston art community and became a founding member of The Ten American Painters, formulated in 1897. This group included Childe Hassam, John Henry Twachtman, Julian Alden Weir, Frank Benson, Thomas Dewing, Willard Metcalf, Robert Reid, Edward Simmons...

'Landscape with Shepherds and Animals' by Louis - Pierre Verwée ( 1807 – 1877 )
Located in Knokke, BE
Verwée Louis-Pierre Courtrai 1807 – 1877 Brussels Belgian Painter 'Landscape with Shepherds and Animals by the Water' Signature: signed lower right and dated 'L. P. Verwee 1851' Medium: oil on panel Dimensions: image size 43 x 52 cm, frame size 58 x 66 cm Biography: Louis-Pierre Verwee (also spelled Verwée) was born on March 19, 1807, in Kortrijk, Belgium, and died in Brussels in November 1877. He is widely regarded as the leading representative of the Romantic school in Belgian landscape painting, particularly known for his evocative winter scenes and rural landscapes with cattle. Verwee left school at an early age to pursue his passion for art. He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kortrijk, where he studied under Jan Baptiste de Jonghe, a prominent landscape and animal painter. He later continued his artistic training with Eugène Verboeckhoven in Ghent, who would not only become his mentor but also a lifelong friend and collaborator. The two artists often worked side by side, and Verboeckhoven occasionally painted the figures and animals in Verwee’s landscapes, to such a degree that their early works are sometimes difficult to distinguish. Verwee followed Verboeckhoven to Brussels and established himself as a successful landscape and animal painter. His preferred subjects were winter and summer scenes, typically populated with figures and animals. His style, particularly in his early work, was closely aligned with that of Verboeckhoven. Over time, he became known for landscapes that reflected the romantic tradition, with compositions echoing the work of Andreas Schelfhout, Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Frans Keelhoff, and Johann Bernard Klombeck. His depictions of forests and rivers often employed a dreamy, atmospheric quality that captured the mood and light of nature. In his later career, Verwee sought artistic innovation but found himself increasingly focused on variations of winter landscapes after 1837. These scenes, popularized by Koekkoek and Schelfhout, were characterized by low-hanging snow clouds, icy waterways, and a cool palette of light blue and metallic grey, creating a moody and intimate ambiance. Occasionally, other artists such as Florent Willems...

California native John Karl Claes’ landscapes enthrall his viewers, drawing them in with the endless horizons, geometric compositions, and vivid, unexpected colors. Upon his return to the San Joaquin Valley after studying art on the East Coast, Claes found the inspiration he had been searching for — the overwhelming openness of the Central Californian agricultural spaces. Not long thereafter, Claes began exploring the area in a friend’s tiny agricultural plane, finally discovering the vantage point from which to capture the true endlessness he found so inspirational. Painting only from memory and small, rapidly-drawn sketches, Claes brings his landscapes to life with sky-high perspectives and rich, saturated colors that surprise the viewer with how natural the intense hues feel in the context of a peaceful landscape. Claes’ paintings evoke an almost surreal sense of wonder for the viewer about how such open, never-ending spaces can be captured within the rectangular confines of a painting. Born and raised in California’s San Joaquin Valley, Claes completed a B.A. in Studio Art from California State University, Stanislaus, and an M.F.A. in painting and drawing from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. He has received numerous awards, both regionally and nationally, and has exhibited his paintings and drawings regularly in solo and group shows throughout the country. Claes currently lives with his wife and two sons in California’s Central...
