Joshi Hoshi Art
Japanese, 1913-1979
Joichi Hoshi was a Japanese printmaker best known for his depictions of trees in centered compositions. The trees are often shown leafless with monochromatic backgrounds, sometimes incorporating gold or silver leaf into the layers of the intricate woodblock process. Born in 1913 in Niigata, Japan, Hoshi began his artistic career after working as an elementary school teacher in Taiwan for several years. He later became a mimeograph printer and started creating his own prints. The artist graduated from the Musashino University of Fine Arts in 1956. Before focusing on his recurring motif of trees in the 1970s, Hoshi depicted galaxies and constellations. He died on June 17, 1979 in Tokyo, Japan. Today, Hoshi’s works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Cincinnati Art Museum, among others.to

Werner Drewes Woodblock Print Cubist Colorful Rare Framed Green Black Red 1982
By Werner Drewes
Located in Buffalo, NY
An original woodblock print by American artist Werner Drews.
This composition comes in an archival frame presentation which measures 26 x 30 on the wall.
Werner Drewes (1899-1985)
Werner Drewes, painter, printmaker, and teacher was born in Canig, Germany in 1899. His father, a Lutheran Minister, hoped he would become and architect but Werner chose the life of an artist. After he served on the front line in France during the war, Werner was admitted to the Bauhaus in 1921 where he studied under Klee, Itten, and Muche. Later, he traveled through Europe to study such old masters as Tintoretto, Velasque, and El Greco. After marrying Margaret Schrobsdorff, they traveled throughout South America, North America, and Asia.
In 1930, Werner immigrated to New York City with his family. In New York City, despite the Depression, Werner joined other Bauhaus artists such as Mondrian and Feininger to make a living as an artist. This group became the core of the American Abstract Artists group. Werner taught at Columbia University, worked on the design of the 1939 Worlds Fair building...

Incorporating jokes reflective of the “borscht belt” humor prevalent in the 1950's, Prince's Joke works tap into social preoccupations of the national subconscious. Prior to Prince's use of the jokes, many had infiltrated popular culture, gradually losing their original authors to become adopted by a largely oral tradition. Beginning in 1984, Richard Prince began assembling one-line gag cartoons and ‘borscht belt’ jokes from the 1950's which he redrew onto small pieces of paper. "Artists were casting sculptures in bronze, making huge paintings, talking about prices and clothes and cars and spending vast amounts of money. So I wrote jokes on little pieces of paper and sold them for $10 each". Following the hand-written jokes and subsequent works in which cartoon images were silk-screened onto canvas, in 1987 Prince adopted a more radical, formulaic strategy of mechanically reproducing classic one liners and gags onto a flat monochrome canvas. Richard Prince's work has been among the most innovative art produced in the United States during the past 30 years. His deceptively simple act in 1977 of rephotographing advertising images and presenting them as his own ushered in an entirely new, critical approach to art-making — one that questioned notions of originality and the privileged status of the unique aesthetic object. Prince's technique involves appropriation; he pilfers freely from the vast image bank of popular culture to create works that simultaneously embrace and critique a quintessentially American sensibility: the Marlboro Man...

Tree

“Tree.” A tree with light green branches poses against a golden/graygreen background. With a limited edition seal of 12/75 in the lower left margin. Hoshi’s unique techniques using gold and silver leaf and blocks that he finished with a blowtorch have been imitated by others, but the power and beauty of his designs remain unequaled. Hoshi used oil paints, so his works do not suffer fading the way most woodblock prints created with water-based paints do. Signed, numbered and titled at bottom in pencil. High Treetop (A)
By Joichi Hoshi
Located in Burbank, CA
Towering tree with an extremely personal perspective, cloaked in blue with a gold background. Hoshi devised a unique method for printing that involved gold and silver leaf, oil paints, and applying a torch to his woodblocks. The branches and the trunk have been printed with a three-dimensional effect. Hoshi’s prints apparently sold out as soon as he completed them. He gives trees their spiritual due. Numbered 86 from a limited edition of 99. Hoshi used oil paints, so his works do not suffer fading the way most woodblock prints created with water-based paints do. Signed and titled at bottom in pencil. Self-printed by the artist. See “Joichi Hoshi: Catalog of All Tree Woodblock...
