18th-C. Antique French Animal Oil Painting after Oudry, Wolf in a Trap, Framed
Loup pris au piège (Wolf Caught in a Trap) is a French School animal oil painting dating to circa 1790, after Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686–1755). Painted by an unidentified artist, this unsigned antique canvas presents a dramatic wildlife subject within a wooded landscape.
The wolf turns sharply beside a steel trap, its alert expression and tense posture forming the focus of the composition. Rocky outcrops, leafy branches and a distant waterside view provide depth, while earthy browns, muted greens and soft blues create a rich, balanced palette. Light across the animal’s fur contrasts with the shaded rocks, heightening the scene’s theatrical character.
Oudry was a leading animal painter in 18th-century France, celebrated for his depictions of wildlife, hunting dogs and game. This later interpretation of his composition reflects the enduring appeal of French animal painting and the sporting tradition.
