Marlon Mullen Abstract Paintings

Born in 1963, Marlon Mullen is a painter who lives and works in Contra Costa County, California, where he has maintained a studio practice at NIAD Art Center since 1993. Mullen has autism spectrum disorder, and is mostly non-verbal. Although it is unclear how much he can read, he represents his own understanding of words and uses their forms in his work. He mostly works from magazine covers and paints them abstractly on paper and canvas.

His work has been shown in galleries such as the Nevica Project (Chicago), JTT (New York), White Columns (New York), Sorry, We’re Closed (Brussels), and Adams And Ollman (Portland). He was one of the standout artists in the 2019 Whitney Biennial in New York and is included in the 2019 SFMOMA’s SECA Awards exhibition.

In Mullen's short professional career, he has already been collected by many important art patrons and included in several museum collections such as Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Berkeley Art Museum, California; Portland Art Museum, Oregon; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; MADMusée, Belgium.

Always Part and Always Whole II - Abstract Acrylic on Paper Soft pastels create this ethereal abstract, by Florida artist, Ronald Dennis Reams (American, b. 1950). Mat size: 16"H x 12"W Paper size: 9.88"H x 7.38"W Reams explores the energy of his art in a sculptural way, building layer upon layer, color upon color. This visceral interpretation aligns with Reams' intent to always paint in the moment, allowing the paint, the emotion, and the energy of the painting to direct what happens on the canvas. In the late nineties, Reams began putting vignettes of drawings and paintings together. He then built fifteen-foot panels of these fragments, creating the equivalent of abstract collage. These large-scale pieces reflected his search for a non-routine way of painting. This new media approach paved the way for the works that followed, as the artist carved out a distinct artistic style of his own. The artist began his formal education at Ringling School of Arts but credits his mentors - David Anderson, Edgar...
