Omari Booker Art

American
Omari Booker, visual artist based in Los Angeles, CA and Nashville, TN, began his journey as an artist his senior year of high school at Montgomery Bell Academy. While attending Belmont University, Omari studied Mathematics and other more traditional curricula before he finally focused on studio art and graphic design. He later earned his B.S. in Graphic Design from Tennessee State University. Oil paintings are Omari’s predominant medium, but mixed media including charcoal, ink, and found objects are essential building blocks of his work, and are used to create finished pieces. Large scale work has been a constant creative outlet for Omari, and murals have also become a consistent part of his creative practice. Omari takes a process-oriented approach to his art, embracing it as a therapeutic modality through which he is able to express his passion for the freedom and independence that the creative process allows him to experience. His art is his personal therapy, and his desire is that those viewing it will have personal experiences of catharsis. The philosophy that undergirds Omari’s work is FREEDOM THROUGH ART and he aspires to create work that communicates to his audience their unique and intrinsic ability to be free.

LOVE, ME - Figurative Painting on Brown Fabric

By Omari Booker

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

This painting by Omari Booker depicts himself and his sister when they were children. Originally painted as a study for a mural in Nashville, Tennessee, Booker reworked this very personal piece to stand alone. On the left side of this painting, Omari's sister sits in a pink and white polk-a-dot dress with a bow in her hair. She looks lovingly at her brother to the right, who is wearing a black and white button-up. The artist recalled that his mother made those outfits by hand, and he alludes to the special nature of textiles in his history by utilizing found fabric rather than a canvas as his medium. Omari Booker, a Nashville native, began his journey in the visual arts at Montgomery Bell Academy. Since then, he has studied and displayed his work at multiple institutions including Belmont University, Middle Tennessee State...

Using pornography as a vehicle for understanding, Rick Sindt's work explores the discovery and development of queer attraction. Sindt transforms pornographic stills, repurposing them into images of intimacy. Rick Sindt A Quiet Line oil on panel 8h x 8w x 0.50d in 20.32h x 20.32w x 1.27d cm RIS034 “This body of work has been crystalizing in my mind for about five years,” says Sindt, “It is the product of reflecting on how the places I learned the most about myself, and my desires, are considered something that sullies a person, something taboo.” Focused on the experiences of gay men, this body of oil paintings depicts moments that range from tender touches to more sexually explicit acts. “It was important to me that I only represent what I know,” explains Sindt, “I identify as a man, and I am attracted to others who identify as men. I don’t believe it is my place to speak on behalf of other members of the queer community whose experiences I am unfamiliar with.” “In creating this work, I spoke with men who told me about how they hid magazines when they were a kid, took out P.O. Boxes in their small hometowns to protect their privacy, and learned how to cover their tracks on the internet. These secretive acts become necessary when the need to understand yourself is great, but your world is bereft of representation."
