Philippe Starck Furniture

French, b. 1949

A ubiquitous name in the world of contemporary architecture and design, Philippe Starck has created everything from hotel interiors and luxury yachts to toothbrushes and teakettles. Yet for every project in his diverse portfolio, Starck has maintained an instantly recognizable signature style: a look that is dynamic, sleek, fluid and witty.

The son of an aircraft engineer, Starck studied interior design at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris. He started his design career in the 1970s decorating nightclubs in the city, and his reputation for spirited and original interiors earned him a commission in 1983 from French president François Mitterrand to design the private apartments of the Élysée Palace. Starck made his name internationally in 1988 with his design for the interiors of the Royalton Hotel in New York, a strikingly novel environment featuring jewel-toned carpeting and upholstery and furnishings with organically shaped cast-aluminum frames. He followed that up in 1990 with an equally impressive redesign of the Paramount Hotel in Manhattan, a project that featured over-scaled furniture as well as headboards that mimicked Old Masters paintings.

Like their designer, furniture pieces by Starck seem to enjoy attention. Designs such as the wedge-shaped J Series club chair; the sweeping molded-mahogany Costes chair; the provocative Ara table lamp; or the sinuous WW stool never fail to raise eyebrows. Other Starck pieces make winking postmodern references to historical designs. His polycarbonate Louis Ghost armchair puts a new twist on Louis XVI furniture; his Out-In chair offers a futuristic take on the classic English high-back chair. But for all his flair, Starck maintains a populist vision of design. While one of his limited-edition Prince de Fribourg et Treyer armchairs might be priced at $7,000, a plastic Starck chair for the Italian firm Kartell is available for around $250. As you will see on 1stDibs, Philippe Starck’s furniture makes a bold statement — and it can add a welcome bit of humor to even the most traditional decor.

Listed for sale is a stunning set of eight Hudson dining chairs in Polished aluminum, designed by Philippe Starck and produced by Emeco. This is one of Emeco's most iconic designs and was also Emeco's first collaboration with renowned designer Philippe Starck. The chair was original conceived for the Hudson Hotel in New York City. While the chair is available in a brushed aluminum, the polished example is the more luxurious variant and looks much like a piece of jewelry. The set was just freshly sent to a profession metal polishing studio, where the chairs were again laboriously polished back to perfection. As a result, each chair looks almost as good as the day they left Emeco's factory. The chairs came from the Boston area...

Post - Modern "John IId" Shelving Unit by Philippe Starck for Disform, 1980
By Philippe Starck
Located in Barcelona, Cataluna
The "John IId" shelving unit was designed by Philippe Starck for Disform in 1890 . It’s a modular design. Consists of 2 black coated tubular metal rods which supports 5 wooden shelves through an ingenious system. Beech wood. t is easier to find them all in black. As we previously highlighted, he is a multidisciplinary artist. So, he does not excel only in one subject, but he is someone very versatile and creative, a brilliant mind. He dedicates himself to the design of everyday products such as furniture and lemon squeezers to revolutionary mega-yachts, intensely vibrant, exhilarating and spooky hotels and the miraculous technologies of individual wind turbines and electricity. As if this were not enough, his creative desires have also led him to car design. Therefore, we are talking about a true visionary who puts the art of innovation at the service of a design and a democratic ecology, driven by action and respectful of human heritage and nature, be it with the Elise recycling bin or the Zartan, the first fully recycled rotomolded chair. We could also highlight among his most relevant works the design of affordable and adjustable PATH houses. A high-tech prefab housing project, they recently attested to the durability of an approach he began in 1994 with the prefab house for sale in the 3 Suisses...

Philippe Starck's most famous design is arguably the Louis Ghost chair. Starck introduced the design for Kartell in 2002, and it became an instant icon. Now, it's easily one of the most recognized (and copied) designs in the world. The Louis Ghost chair is a postmodern take on the classic Louis XVI armchair, a style that emerged under the tumultuous reign of King Louis-Auguste and Queen Marie Antoinette. The second half of the chair's name refers to its materiality. It wasn't Starck's first plastic chair for Kartell, but it was the first time a single polycarbonate plastic mold was used in the process, creating a structure completely free of joints. Formally, Starck distilled the geometry of his antique reference to its main elements: the oval-shaped backrest, curved armrests and straight legs, creating a piece that has remained popular for more than 20 years.
