Philippe Starck Furniture

French, b. 1949

A ubiquitous name in the world of contemporary architecture and design, Philippe Starck has created everything from hotel interiors and luxury yachts to toothbrushes and teakettles. Yet for every project in his diverse portfolio, Starck has maintained an instantly recognizable signature style: a look that is dynamic, sleek, fluid and witty.

The son of an aircraft engineer, Starck studied interior design at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris. He started his design career in the 1970s decorating nightclubs in the city, and his reputation for spirited and original interiors earned him a commission in 1983 from French president François Mitterrand to design the private apartments of the Élysée Palace. Starck made his name internationally in 1988 with his design for the interiors of the Royalton Hotel in New York, a strikingly novel environment featuring jewel-toned carpeting and upholstery and furnishings with organically shaped cast-aluminum frames. He followed that up in 1990 with an equally impressive redesign of the Paramount Hotel in Manhattan, a project that featured over-scaled furniture as well as headboards that mimicked Old Masters paintings.

Like their designer, furniture pieces by Starck seem to enjoy attention. Designs such as the wedge-shaped J Series club chair; the sweeping molded-mahogany Costes chair; the provocative Ara table lamp; or the sinuous WW stool never fail to raise eyebrows. Other Starck pieces make winking postmodern references to historical designs. His polycarbonate Louis Ghost armchair puts a new twist on Louis XVI furniture; his Out-In chair offers a futuristic take on the classic English high-back chair. But for all his flair, Starck maintains a populist vision of design. While one of his limited-edition Prince de Fribourg et Treyer armchairs might be priced at $7,000, a plastic Starck chair for the Italian firm Kartell is available for around $250. As you will see on 1stDibs, Philippe Starck’s furniture makes a bold statement — and it can add a welcome bit of humor to even the most traditional decor.

Baleri Italia Cafè Chair by Philippe Starck

By Baleri Italia, Philippe Starck

Located in Milano, Lombardia

A chair designed by the most famous French creator for the then most famous French café: Café Costes in Paris. This stackable chair is solid and comfortable: the ideal chair for a café. Divised in close cooperation with Baleri Italia, the minimal and timeless lines of the Café Chair can elegantly match with all both public and private interiors and lifestyles. Structure in steel tubing painted with epoxy powders in metallic silver gloss. The seat in lasten: latex rubber and polypropylene belting in black. Philippe Starck, world famous creator with multifaceted inventiveness, is always focused on the essential, his vision: that creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible. By employing his prolific work across all domains, from everyday products (furniture, a citrus-squeezer, electric bikes, an individual wind turbine), to architecture (hotels, restaurants that aspire to be stimulating places) and naval and spatial engineering (mega yachts, space habitation module), he continually pushes the boundaries and requirements of design, becoming one of the most visionary and renowned creators of the international contemporary scene. In 1984 and 1985, Philippe Starck collaborated with Baleri to create five pieces of furniture: Café Chair, Francesca Spanish, Richard III, Président M...

Baleri Italia Mac Gee Bookshelf in Black Steel by Philippe Starck

By Philippe Starck, Baleri Italia

Located in Milano, Lombardia

Mac Gee is the essence of a bookshelf. Philippe Starck cleaned and cleaned the structure to only keep the square root, the skeleton of a bookshelf. Therefore avoiding styles, the timeless Mac Gee has lived for decades, as if simply leaned against the wall, almost as an object trouvé that matches every interiors and transcends trends. Modular bookshelves in a steel sheet with epoxy finish in semi-glossy RAL 9010. A central upright structure supports five shelves of decreasing depths. Philippe Starck, world famous creator with multifaceted inventiveness, is always focused on the essential, his vision: that creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible. Baleri Italia Richard III Armchair in Black Leather by Philippe Starck

Baleri Italia Richard III Armchair in Black Leather by Philippe Starck

By Philippe Starck, Baleri Italia

Located in Milano, Lombardia

The very essence of bourgeois décor with a modern twist, the object as a mask, a technological jack-in-the-box. These are the ingredients of this highly symbolic armchair. The Richard III was created by Philippe Starck who, moved by the sight of battered old club armchairs abandoned in the street, decided to give them a new life. At this time, Starck was imagining President’s private apartment interiors in the Elysée Palace and the Richard III became President François Mitterrand’s favorite armchair. Armchair with completely molded structure in rigid structural polyurethane, painted with polyurethane enamel. Cushion in expanded polyurethane and dacron.

Philippe Starck's most famous design is arguably the Louis Ghost chair. Starck introduced the design for Kartell in 2002, and it became an instant icon. Now, it's easily one of the most recognized (and copied) designs in the world. The Louis Ghost chair is a postmodern take on the classic Louis XVI armchair, a style that emerged under the tumultuous reign of King Louis-Auguste and Queen Marie Antoinette. The second half of the chair's name refers to its materiality. It wasn't Starck's first plastic chair for Kartell, but it was the first time a single polycarbonate plastic mold was used in the process, creating a structure completely free of joints. Formally, Starck distilled the geometry of his antique reference to its main elements: the oval-shaped backrest, curved armrests and straight legs, creating a piece that has remained popular for more than 20 years. On 1stDibs, find a collection of Philippe Starck furniture.
