Raymond Thibesart Figurative Paintings

1874-1968

Raymond Thibésart was born into an affluent family in the town of Troyes, the historical capital of the Champagne region in France. Shortly afterward, the family moved to Enghiens-les-Bains, an attractive spa town to the North of Paris. It was here that they met the Boggios, a charismatic family who had just emigrated from Venezuela; Emilio Boggio, a talented Impressionist painter, became Thibésart's long-standing mentor and friend, encouraging his early promise and providing him with his first art lessons.

Thibésart began his formal training at the École des Beaux Arts and subsequently at the Académie Julian where he was taught by Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert Fleury. After art school, he maintained his friendship with Emilio Boggio and they both moved to Vaux sur Seine, northwest of Paris. They frequently traveled throughout Europe, including trips to Italy, Corsica and Switzerland. They were often joined by Henri Martin (1860–1943) who, like Thibesart, remained faithful to an Impressionist style for most of his life.

Thibésart lived a long life and painted prolifically, a favorite subject being blossoming trees on the banks of the Seine. It was only the loss of his sight at the age of 92 that put a halt to his artistic output, just two years before his death in 1968.

The artist exhibited throughout his life, notably at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1897 (he was awarded a silver medal in 1922), the Salon des Indépendants from 1905 and at the Salon d’Automne. Thibésart’s work can be found in public and private collections, including at the Musée de Troyes in his birthplace.

Pluie a Venice (Venice in the Rain)
By André Hambourg
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Pluie a Venice is painted in Hambourg's preferred palette of muted blue-green, grey, and gold with splashes of ruby red, deep blue, and emerald green. The soft colors work well for beach scenes and rainy days such as the ones portrayed in this painting. The impressionistic scene shows multiple pedestrians strolling down the boardwalk, shielding themselves from the rain with colorful umbrellas that provide pops of color and balance the overcast sky. The background contains a three-masted ship and Piazza San Marco's famous bell tower and Basilica. Hambourg uses the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to portray ships, seagulls, buildings and people as well as reflections on the glistening sidewalk. The brushstrokes in the sky have an interesting texture that is controlled yet carefree and there is heavy impasto throughout. His portrayal is both realistic and romanticized. Hambourg was clearly influenced by the great Impressionist artists of earlier generations, perhaps none more than the one with a direct connection to his family. Hambourg's wife, Nicole Rachet, was born into a family with a large collection of works by Impressionist master Eugene Boudin. Rachet's grandfather was a contemporary and friend of Boudin's, and a collector of his work. In their later years, Hambourg and Rachet donated over 300 canvases by Boudin and other artists to the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur, France. It was such a large and important gift that the collection bears...

"Cottage with Olive Tree (La Colle-sur-Loup)" O/C Raymond Thibesart (1874-1968)
By Raymond Thibesart
Located in SANTA FE, NM
"Cottage with Olive Tree, La Colle-sur-Loup, France" Raymond Thibesart (French, 1874-1968) Oil on canvas 24 x 20 (31 x 27 frame size) inches Signed lower right: R. Thibésart Signed, numbered and inscribed verso: no. 1701 / Olivier soiz / LaColle ... Loup / R. Thibésart Raymond Thibesart was born into an affluent family on May 2nd, 1874. As a small child, Thibesart’s family moved to a suburb of Paris where the very young artist found a wealth of teachers and inspiration to pull from. Thibesart showed such proclivity for drawing at an early age, and had enough talent that famed impressionist Emile Boggio began giving him lessons when he was just 11 years old. Eventually, Thibesart began formal training at the Lycee Rollin in Paris, followed by studies at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian. While working in Symbolism, Thibesart became a student of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art movements of his native France and began winning numerous medals in France, including the gold medal from the Societe des Artistes Francais in 1897. Thibesart then began his studies with the famed Impressionist Henri Martin for much of his early life. From Martin, he learned the technique of “plein air" painting who as a master of the discipline. Proficiency of this technique and its aesthetic, freed up the young artist, allowing him the ability to create amazingly beautiful light and shadow splayed across his trademark subjects which frequently included the landscapes of Italy...

Raymond Thibésart, French Impressionist, A picnic under the Cherry blossom
By Raymond Thibesart
Located in Harkstead, GB
Raymond Thibésart (1874-1968) Le déjeuner sous un cerisier en fleurs Signed, inscribed with title and dated "1919" verso, Oil on canvas, 20 x 26 inches Painted in 1919, this blissfully tranquil scene with farm workers resting beneath the shade of a blossoming cherry tree has an added poignancy when one reflects on its proximity to the end of the First World War. The artist presents a timeless vision of peace and simple pleasure with the figures sheltering in the fragrant shade, a midday break from their daily toils. Blossom was a favourite subject of the artist, allowing him to display subtle tonal differences and contrasts with the surrounding landscape. A beautiful image in very good original condition. Raymond Thibésart was born into an affluent family in the town of Troyes, the historical capital of the Champagne region. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to Enghiens-les-Bains, an attractive spa town to the North of Paris.
