Robert Zakanitch Art
American, b. 1935
Robert Zakanitch has been exhibiting in New York since 1965. He is one of the founders of the pattern and decorative movement. He has had group exhibitions at the Whitney Annual, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. His work can be found in permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Albright Knox Museum, Brooklyn Museum and the Tate Gallery, London. He has had one-man shows in Paris, Basel, Zürich, Berlin, and Koln and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1995. Most contemporary art history books include Robert Zakanitch.
In 2003, as with his important paintings of pattern and decoration, he exhibited his "Aggressive Goodness" acrylic and gouache paintings a series of dog paintings which show that art can lift the human spirit. In his own words his dog paintings are “to remind us of our compassion and evoke nurturing, caring, sentimentality, romance, kindness, etiquette (that’s right, etiquette), sweetness, respect, beauty and the sense of well being”.(Biography provided by Dog & Horse Fine Art)

Untitled - Mostly Mozart '77
By Robert Zakanitch
Located in Santa Fe, NM
Robert Zakanitch was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and now lives and works in New York City. Zakanitch began exhibiting in the late 1960s with Color Field paintings, but he first achieved real note as one of the founders of the Pattern and Decoration movement in the mid 1970s. When Zakanitch took up decorative imagery, he had been working as a color field abstractionist faithful to the Minimalist grid as the structural system of his painting. Once into decoration, he retained both his color sophistication and his respect for structure but translated the latter into a free, often organic floral motif rendered in a painterly fashion.
In 1975, Robert Zakanitch met Miriam Schapiro during a term of guest teaching at the University of California in San Diego, and early the following year in New York the two painters organized the Pattern and Decoration Artists. The group held their first meeting in a SoHo loft...

Though Warhol began his career as a fashion and children’s book illustrator, much of his later work focused on fame, consumer culture and the cult of celebrities as signifiers. In his exploration of fame, he would occasionally dip into the pool of politics and politicians. In the last year before his death in 1987, using a photograph by Philipp Schönborn, Warhol centered his attention on one of his final subjects - Vladimir Lenin. Known as one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century, Lenin was the undisputed political engineer and founder of the one-party socialist state. Lenin played a pivotal role in changing the course of Russian history...
