In his studio, with large skylights, Rutger Hiemstra works on various subjects: still-lifes, portraits and, for example, large cloudy skies. In addition, he can also be found outside regularly, to make small 'plein-air' paintings. A few hours of sitting outside and painting a beautiful painting about it, that 'can not be better', according to Hiemstra. Rutger worked in Denmark, Switzerland, France and England, he also likes working in his own environment and is easily inspired by simple and daily 'things'. His self-tanned garden fence is also a wonderful subject. Inspiration enough, but time too short to draw and paint all the subjects that pass by. During our introduction to these artist, at the begin of 2017, it became clear how driven Rutger is. His own compiled book of artists that inspires him and of which he carefully studies the work is always within reach in his studio. When leaving, Rutger shows how he builds up his still lifes. A self-molded table top with potatoes 'scattered' on it. This is a while, downstairs in the living room, and here and there things change. Finally, if the composition really suits him, he will paint it. In his paintings, Rutger shows us how surprising his still-lifes, small, intimate or colorful and of great size can be. The material expression and atmosphere in the work of this artist is particularly well-suited in all formats. In January 2018 we had a big exhibition with his works, Dutch newspaper 'NRC' wrote an article about his works with the title: Anti-Depressive medication in paint by Rutger Hiemstra, we totally agree. The works of Rutger make you smile! The article in het NRC: Hiemstra's still life are antidepressants in paint Gallery Bonnard, Nuenen Rutger Hiemstra paints easter eggs, tompoucen or fresh mint in such a way that you think: but of course deserve a painting! For a child, Easter eggs are sensational. To begin with, they are bigger, if you are smaller. They have a nice shape: just not round. They shine and come in festive colors. And if you wipe off the wrapper there is no real egg, but chocolate. Later you are grown up and you know those things by now. Every year around Easter they are for sale with containers. They lie in front of the house and office. Easter egg? Yes Nice. But nothing special. Until you see them painted by Rutger Hiemstra (1975). He looks childishly at all those colorful glittering unround marbles - and he knows how to share his elation with it in a still life. Hiemstra makes Easter eggs unusual again, just as he also shows tompoucing, a glass of white wine or fresh mint, a pink cake...

William Hughes British, 19th Century Study of Apples, circa 1870 Oil on panel Monogrammed lower right A finely observed and intimate still life by William Hughes, painted circa 1870, depicting a small grouping of apples arranged upon a simple wooden surface. Executed with quiet restraint and technical assurance, the composition reflects the enduring appeal of Victorian still life painting, where humble subjects are elevated through careful observation and painterly sensitivity. The apples, shown attached to a slender branch with leaves, are rendered with particular attention to texture and natural variation. Subtle transitions of colour—soft greens, warm russets, and touches of golden ochre—capture the ripeness and individuality of each fruit. The surfaces are delicately modelled, with highlights and imperfections thoughtfully described, lending the work both realism and charm. Set against a rich, dark background, the fruit is brought into sharp relief, a compositional device that enhances both depth and focus. The contrast between the illuminated forms and the shadowed ground creates a sense of quiet drama, while the horizontal line of the wooden ledge anchors the composition with stability and balance. Hughes’ handling is confident yet controlled, combining fine brushwork with a painterly softness that avoids excessive detail. The leaves and stems are treated with a lighter touch, providing a natural counterpoint to the more solid forms of the apples. This balance between precision and atmosphere is characteristic of well-executed 19th-century British still life painting...

Small Fauvist River Landscape Painting with Boat, Expressionist Oil on Panel Medium: Oil on panel Dimensions: 26 x 33 cm (10.24 x 13 in) Framing: Unframed Signature: Signed lower left Date: c.2020 Condition: Good condition. Stable support and well-preserved paint layer. A vibrant small-scale landscape painting depicting a river scene with a boat, industrial architecture and simplified human figures. Executed with a loose and expressive brushwork, the composition reflects a strong fauvist and expressionist influence. The artist uses bold contrasts of reds, yellows, greens and blues to create a dynamic and almost naïve atmosphere, reminiscent of early 20th-century European modernism reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Despite its modest size, the painting has a strong visual presence, making it ideal for collectors of small-format works or for curated gallery wall compositions. Vladimir Ksieski...

"Romantical" (2022) by Carrie Goller, Oil & Cold Wax Painting, Hummingbird

Located in Denver, CO

Carrie Goller's (US based) "Romantical" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a hummingbird hovering above white orchids. This piece is unframed yet ready to hang. Born and raised on Washington’s tiny Bainbridge Island, artist Carrie Goller recalls being advised as a child to pursue a career in fine art. After an early career as a paralegal, a life-changing experience led her to become a serious and dedicated artist. Once I finally indulged my need to create art, the door was opened and I haven’t looked back. I’ve been making up for lost time; a bit obsessed. Art is now a necessity for me. I find true expression and balance in that world, says Goller. Goller is inspired by simple, sensuous organic forms and the realm of colors, shapes and textures found in nature. Her thoughtful approach to subject matter can be evidenced from her tender still life work, along with a passion for rendering impressionist oils of daily life. From her Bainbridge Island and Hood Canal...
