Steve Chase Sofas

American, 1941-1994

Steve Chase lived in and worked out of Palm Springs, California, but he created luxury spaces and furniture for projects that took shape all over the world. A consummate art collector and brilliant interior designer, Chase was involved in every aspect of the rooms he designed and attracted many high-profile clients, including Gerald and Betty Ford, Farrah Fawcett and Gene Hackman.

Chase was born in New Hampshire and attended the Rhode Island School of Design as well as the ArtCenter in Los Angeles. After completing his studies, he joined Arthur Elrod and Associates — a celebrated Palm Springs-based firm that created colorful interiors and furniture for a range of Hollywood stars and more during the height of the mid-century modern era. Chase worked with Elrod for more than a decade before establishing his own business in 1980.

Chase designed his furniture to meet the sensibilities and personalities of his clients, and his work ranged from the traditional to the tastefully unconventional. While he created sculptural brass side tables that boast striking brutalist forms, there were also understated chrome-framed coffee tables with fossil shell tops. For his seating, Chase’s palette ranged from bright pastels to modest earth tones, and his vintage sofas are known for their signature tufted-channel backrests and seats. The plush cushioning was most prevalent in his Monterey seating collection of chairs, sectionals and sofas manufactured by the firm Martin Brattrud Inc., which produced most of Chase's designs during the 1970s and '80s.

Chase supported a number of charitable organizations and strongly advocated for the Desert AIDS Project (DAP), a volunteer-led initiative to combat the HIV epidemic in Coachella Valley. He lent his design talents to improve their office space, and used his influence with celebrities to enlist their help on the project. Chase also joined the Contemporary Art Council Acquisitions Committee at the Palm Springs Art Museum and eventually bequeathed more than 130 works to the institution when he passed away in 1994.

In 1996, the DAP created the annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards to honor him. Today he is remembered for his humanitarian giving as often he is for his furniture designs and lively interiors.

2 Steve Chase Sculptural Mid-Century Modern Wool "Amphibious" Settee Sofas Pair
By Steve Chase
Located in Dayton, OH
An iconic pair of Steve Chase "Amphibious" sofas for Preview, circa 1970s. Features the original checkered wool upholstery with an architectural marshmallow frame over a plinth base. Realizing his talents earlier than most, Chase began shaping his career and his distinctive style at age seventeen when he joined the design firm of La Tienda in Los Angeles. A 14-year affiliation with Arthur Elrod Associates followed, ending in 1980 with the founding of his namesake firm, Steve Chase Associates. With a staff of more than 20 based in Rancho Mirage, California, Chase’s projects extended beyond his signature residential work to include aircraft, yachts and homes in such far-off lands as Singapore and Germany. In addition, Chase designed the Bob Hope Cultural Center, the Behring Auto Museum and several West Coast...

Steve Chase and Jack Lenor Larsen Illuminated Channel Tufted Sofa, Signed, 1988
By Martin Battrud, Steve Chase
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This amazing custom curved sofa was designed by Steve Chase in which he personally selected a charming Jack Lenor Larsen fabric named "Lilliput" and placed it on a cozy 2-piece L-shaped sectional sofa with illuminated plinth base and arms on both ends. Signed underneath with a Martin / Brattrud Inc manufacturing label listing Steve Chase Associates as the Made Expressly For, referencing the Jack Lenor Larsen Lilliput fabric, the model number of Custom 168, and dated November of 1988. With lights underneath, this sofa can illuminate at the base. This can also be swapped for Philips Hue colored LEDs if you want something fresh and new. This sectional sofa was recently featured on the set of the hit TV show "Glow. This cozy Steve Chase channel tufted two-piece sectional has a finished backside allowing you to float it in a room and use as a partial room divider, although it also works well placed against a wall if you prefer. The deep channel tufted is more exaggerated than many other of Steve Chase's channel tufted designs, making this a more desirable example. The condition is very good, well cared for, with no rips, tears, stains or odors. The fabric has light aging but colors and patterns are still vibrant and has many years left to use, love and appreciate while watching your favourite shows and your beloved friends, family and pets. Similar to the Milo Baughman curved semicircle sofa and the Serpentine and Cloud sofas for Directional, this curved sectional sofa can provide endless hours of entertaining in a conversation pit styled room or any room where you want to entertain company. This expansive channel tufted L-shaped sectional couch was custom designed by Steve Chase and manufactured by Martin Brattrud Inc using the highest quality of materials and craftsmanship (they don't make them like they used to is a correct statement here). Channel tufting is currently a much-publicized trend and this piece is reminiscent of the award-winning decor of "The Gallery" inside "Sketch," the illustrious nightspot in Mayfair, London, by designer India Mahdavi. The sofa features an illuminated in-set plinth base, which gives the allusion of a floating seat, sturdy armrests, original Jack Lenor Larsen upholstery fabric and posses manufacture tag dated 11 / 1988. The L-shape design allows this sofa to be slotted neatly into a corner for optimal space or positioned in the center of an open floor plan. While the Jack Lenor Larsen is just simply fantastic, if you really wanted to you could reupholster this to something new. This cozy sectional could be upholstered in a plethora of inspirational fabric or leather choices such as; a sumptuous navy velvet, understated black bull hide leather, textured neutral bouclé, colorful shagreen or Palm Springs inspired tropical print. This sofa would be perfect in an airy open plan casita, Mid-Century Modern, Contemporary or Postmodern desert dwelling, luxe contemporary penthouse or cozy dark walled den. It would also optimize alternate spaces such as; a boutique hotel lobby, chic cocktail lounge, exclusive members club, restaurant bar area or eclectic office...
