Steve Chase Seating

American, 1941-1994

Steve Chase lived in and worked out of Palm Springs, California, but he created luxury spaces and furniture for projects that took shape all over the world. A consummate art collector and brilliant interior designer, Chase was involved in every aspect of the rooms he designed and attracted many high-profile clients, including Gerald and Betty Ford, Farrah Fawcett and Gene Hackman.

Chase was born in New Hampshire and attended the Rhode Island School of Design as well as the ArtCenter in Los Angeles. After completing his studies, he joined Arthur Elrod and Associates — a celebrated Palm Springs-based firm that created colorful interiors and furniture for a range of Hollywood stars and more during the height of the mid-century modern era. Chase worked with Elrod for more than a decade before establishing his own business in 1980.

Chase designed his furniture to meet the sensibilities and personalities of his clients, and his work ranged from the traditional to the tastefully unconventional. While he created sculptural brass side tables that boast striking brutalist forms, there were also understated chrome-framed coffee tables with fossil shell tops. For his seating, Chase’s palette ranged from bright pastels to modest earth tones, and his vintage sofas are known for their signature tufted-channel backrests and seats. The plush cushioning was most prevalent in his Monterey seating collection of chairs, sectionals and sofas manufactured by the firm Martin Brattrud Inc., which produced most of Chase's designs during the 1970s and '80s.

Chase supported a number of charitable organizations and strongly advocated for the Desert AIDS Project (DAP), a volunteer-led initiative to combat the HIV epidemic in Coachella Valley. He lent his design talents to improve their office space, and used his influence with celebrities to enlist their help on the project. Chase also joined the Contemporary Art Council Acquisitions Committee at the Palm Springs Art Museum and eventually bequeathed more than 130 works to the institution when he passed away in 1994.

In 1996, the DAP created the annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards to honor him. Today he is remembered for his humanitarian giving as often he is for his furniture designs and lively interiors.

1980s Le Bambole Sofa Design Mario Bellini for B&B Italia White Boucle Fabric
By B&B Italia, Mario Bellini
Located in Jersey City, NJ
Very Rare Mario Bellini Authentic Vintage 1980s 'Le Bambole' Sofa made of 4 modular elements, two armless elements and two corner end elements. Rare composition due to the presence of two corner elements (which are very difficult to find on the market) which allow for different layouts. Pictures show different settings for the same sofa. Made in the 1980s, restored inside and out, and newly upholstered. You can use these four pieces in several layouts, L shape corner, a three large seater and one separate chair, a settee and two separate chairs or a four seater long sofa. Authentic from the 1980s and fully restored by our skilled Italian upholsterer, with new luxury Italian boucle' fabric upholstery in white. Original bottom jute with B&B brand name (under the sofa) and original B&B label. Dimensions: Corner layout as shown in the pictures: 101" x 66" Each armless chair : 31" w x 35" d Each corner/end chair: 34" w x 35" d Height is 28/30" at top Seat height 18" All sizes are approximate. Can be arranged in several configurations. Material: Italian boucle' in white, sourced in Italy, a blend of viscose, wool, linen, cotton and synthetic. Condition: excellent, fully restored inside and out. We kept the original jute at the bottom which bears manufacturer B&B Italia stamp on jute. The jute is the original one and presents some wear due to the fact that it is in direct contact with floor. The jute is not visible as it is under the sofa. The djute has been completely relined in the interior. Le Bambole is an iconic design from the 1970s and 1980s, originally designed in 1972 for C&B Italia. It is another timeless design conceived by Architect Mario Bellini after the Camaleonda, Amanta and Scacchi collections. It's design was revolutionary: construction was made by multi density polyurethane foam shaping into a whole cushion for the seat and back, not supported by conventional frames and belts but by four metal vertical inserts at the front and back connected by a light metal base. The polyurethane molded structure played a key role in defining the comfort of this sofa which initially was conceived for softness and comfort on every angle, with the consequential disappearance of bulky bearing structures and stiff corners. The many different elements of the collection spanned from armchairs to sectional elements to chaises to give user multiple possibilities to create unique personalized layouts. It seems almost natural that Le Bambole won the Compasso D’Oro award in 1979. From there it was an escalation of successes. The sofa is now part of the Museum of Modern Art of New York permanent collection. Even its marketing campaign made people talk when the company hired photographer Oliviero Toscani to shoot the ad campaign. The testimonial was model and Andy Warhol muse Donna Jordan...
