Tréology Furniture

New Zealander

Tréology is a New Zealand–based company that continues a 150-year-old family tradition of furniture making. Its mission is to connect people with nature through contemporary organic furniture such as its mid-century modern-inspired desks, dining room tables, stools and other pieces.

A reverence for New Zealand’s natural landscape is evident at all stages of the firm’s design process, from the inspiration behind its collections to its hands-on approach to sourcing the reclaimed wood it uses.

“The trees are rescued from rivers on the West Coast of New Zealand,” says Andrew Davies, Tréology’s cofounder and CEO. “It is a place I love to explore and take my family on adventure. I personally inspect and catalogue all our timber slabs before they are stored for drying. We love to connect our clients to the place where the tree was rescued, so we put the geographic coordinates of where the tree was found on our furniture.”

In addition to salvaging from rivers, Tréology uses wood that has been submerged in fjords and historical timber from earthquake sites in Christchurch.

The ancient kauri timber employed in its lauded Umber collection comes from swamps in northern New Zealand, a sacred Maori site, where it had lain underwater for more than 45,000 years, preserved by the low oxygen conditions. Once retrieved, the logs must be given time to dry before they can be made into furniture.

“Waiting a few more years before we use them takes a bit of patience, but like a fine whiskey, good things take time,” Davies says.

Nature Inspired Modern Organic Credenza Made from Sustainable River Rescued Wood
By Tréology
Located in Papanui, Christchurch
Awa Kōpaka means glacier in te reo Māori. The Awa Kōpaka credenza was inspired by our observations of the organic forms of the glaciers on the West Coast of New Zealand. The credenza was designed by Richard Simpson during a three-day road trip down the West Coast, as we explored the Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers. Standing at the face of the glaciers we could see this enormous fissure of ice and we could hear it cracking & moving. You could see where it was carved out and the beautiful organic forms on the ice itself. Awa Kōpaka is expressing that form into a functional cabinet. It is a narrative about the movement of ice and how it continues to shape the landscape of New Zealand. The credenza is made from a matai tree rescued from a river on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. This sustainable timber...

Odyssey Modern Organic Ancient Wood Live Edge Slab Table, Polished Nickel Base
By Tréology
Located in Papanui, Christchurch
Tréology is about connecting people to nature through functional art. Odyssey was created after a road trip to New Zealand's wild West Coast to observe nature’s craft work. Looking deep into nature, we saw the layered rock formations along the sea coast and rivers of New Zealand to achieve a functional table base. The design progression sought to bring layering metaphors into the piece, but a solid mass would be visually too heavy. The solution was to add volume through the introduction of negative space and deliver an abstract representation of the rocks and boulders we observed. Odyssey introduces the interplay with both positive and negative space so the perspective alters when walking around the piece. The Odyssey Live Edge Slab Table...

Modern Organic Live Edge Slab Reflect Coffee Table made from Ancient Wood
By Tréology
Located in Papanui, Christchurch
Reflect takes its name from the way the base mimics the changing landscape of Fiordland in the South Island of New Zealand. The non-geometric form is reflected on opposite sides yet as you move around the table, the perspective and angles change just as they would on Milford Sound. The Reflect Coffee Table is made from sustainable ancient totara trees that have fallen naturally into rivers and preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them. We rescue these trees and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art. The trees location co-ordinates are inscribed on a stainless steel Tréology tag and attached to the table, connecting the owner to a unique piece of New Zealand nature. Totara is a native tree of New Zealand. It was the primary wood used in Maori carving and to make waka (war canoes) in traditional Maori boat building. The organic live edge slab expresses the raw beauty of the wood and showcases the majestic way in which Mother Nature crafts this wonderful material. A brushed stainless-steel base was chosen to both compliment and highlight the totara’s natural beauty while also presenting a visual reference to where this timber was rescued. This statement piece features the wabi-sabi effect of celebrating the imperfections of naturally felled totara timber hewn into live-edge slabs, butterfly joins and stainless steel, wire-base, sculptural legs. The timber slab has the saw marks from the mill that have been de-burred and sanded so it is pleasant to the touch. The timber is finished with a hand-rubbed, low V.O.C. natural oil to bring the gorgeous wood grain to life. Handmade in Christchurch, New Zealand. L 75” x W 31.5" x H 15.5" L 1900mm x W 800mm x H 390mm Customization of dimensions, wood species and finish are available by request. Ebb & Flow Modern Organic Credenza Made from River Rescued Ancient Wood
By Tréology
Located in Papanui, Christchurch
The Ebb & Flow credenza was inspired by our observations of an ocean worn cliff face on the wild West Coast of New Zealand. Our search for design inspiration took us on an adventure to the Truman Track - a walk through unspoiled subtropical forest where ancient native trees tower above thickets of vine and palms. The track emerges on a spectacular coastline with cliffs, caverns, and a waterfall that plummets straight onto a rock-strewn beach. The Ebb & Flow credenza is our representation of the powerful ocean forces that have shaped the natural landscape of New Zealand. The credenza is made from a matai tree (New Zealand native tree) rescued from a river on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. This sustainable timber, naturally felled by nature, has been carbon dated at over 1500 years old. The trees location co-ordinates are inscribed on a stainless Tréology tag and attached to the credenza, connecting the owner to a unique piece of New Zealand nature. Modern Organic Live Edge Slab Canopy Table Made from Sustainable Ancient Wood
By Tréology
Located in Papanui, Christchurch
The Canopy table was inspired by a walk through the New Zealand native forest, looking up to the tree canopy observing the tree trunks and branches. Canopy is a design metaphor of the tree itself. Each leg is a trunk with branches that create their own unique spatial geometry with positive and negative spaces. Moving around the table is a true three-dimensional experience where the legs represent the trunks and branches of the trees, and visually interact just like a canopy in the forest. Canopy is also a testament to the craftsmanship of Mother Nature and the craftsmen at Treology. We wanted the timber to tell its own story and a base that added to the narrative. It’s also functional ensuring it accommodates people to sit around and share the pleasure of family dining. The Canopy Live Edge Slab table is made from rimu, a New Zealand native tree, rescued from a river on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. This sustainable timber, naturally felled by nature, is preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them. We rescue these trees and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art. The river rescued trees have been carbon dated at over 1500 years old.
