Warren W. Sheppard Art
American, 1858-1937
Warren Sheppard was born on April 10, 1858 in Greenwich, New Jersey along the Delaware River. This town was known as a seaport and shipbuilding center since the Colonial days. Sheppard’s father was a lumber ship captain and often took his son on trips along the river where the young boy was exposed to the sea and its ways. He studied painting under Mauritz Frederik de Haas (1832-1895), but received his formal artistic training at the Cooper Union, one of the nation's oldest institutions of higher learning, dedicated exclusively to preparing students for the professions of art and architecture. Sheppard was the essence and the personification of the Renaissance Man. He was first and foremost an artist, but he was also a teacher; a yacht designer as well as a yachtsman; and a navigator as well as the author of two books on navigation entitled, Practical Navigation and A Tale of the Sea which he also illustrated. Because Sheppard was intimately acquainted with the sea and its physicality coupled with his detailed knowledge of the design of the ships and their riggings, he was able to secure a number of commissions for illustrations in several well-known periodicals of the time such as the Brooklyn Eagle, the New York Herald Tribune, and the New York Sun.to

Marine painter Warren W. Sheppard was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, to a ship captain father who instilled in his son a love and respect for the sea. He studied privately with Mauritz F. H. De Haas and took courses in drawing at Cooper Union in New York City. He traveled along the Mediterranean coast in 1879, sketching the ports of Naples, Gibraltar, Genoa and Messina. Sheppard’s foreign tours continued between 1888 and 1893, with stays in Paris and Venice, where he captured the architecture and busy canals of the Floating City. This fondness for travel also translated to his home country. He sailed along the East Coast from New Jersey to Maine in search of subjects and was an expert navigator, eventually writing the book Practical Navigation. Yacht design became a second career for Sheppard and he participated in a number of sailing competitions himself, most notably winning the New York-to-Bermuda race twice while skipper of the Tamerlane.

A student of Dutch marine artist, Mauritz de Haas, Warren Sheppard built two successful careers around his love of the sea: marine painting and yacht designing. He was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, a town on the Delaware River below Philadelphia, which has been associated with ships and shipping since the earliest Colonial times. His father was a sea captain and the young Sheppard took many voyages with his father to make artistic studies. He learned perspective drawing at Cooper Union in New York City in addition to his studies with de Haas. In 1879, he spent four months sketching Mediterranean port cities including Gibraltar, Genoa, Naples and Messina in Sicily. Between 1888 and 1893, he also studied painting in Venice and Paris. By the time he was in his mid-thirties, he had established himself as a successful illustrator and painter. The yachts he painted were the most lavish of his day, owned by the wealthiest of men. He was an expert in the design and rigging of ships of present and earlier times. His work was highly regarded for its authenticity as well as its artistic merit.Sheppard was also an expert navigator and sailed a number of famous yachts in races. Twice he was to command Tamerlane when it won the New York to Bermuda run. His book, Practical Navigation, was used for many years by the United States Naval Academy...
