About Emma Scully Gallery

Emma Scully Gallery promotes applied arts through a curated exhibition program. Curated context is the origin of meaning of our programming. Conceptual interpretation is at the heart of our contextualization. Context is never neutral. The belief that the white box is a neutral space supports a particular type of art, one situated in a narrative of art as individual expression. Applied arts are social and cultural expression. Applied art objects are not intended for white box spaces, by imposing ‘neutral’ presentation on these objects you present fragments. We look to ...Read More

Hand-Carved Sculptural Chair in Laminated White Washi Paper and Milk Paint
By Simone Bodmer-Turner
Located in New York, NY
One-of-a-kind, sculptural chair finished in milky white laminated washi paper, hand-made by Simone Bodmer-Turner in 2023. Known for graceful and poetic work that balances in between functional and artistic, Bodmer-Turner's "Chair III (Paper)" is as usable as it is visually and spatially compelling. The third-ever chair made by the artist, the singular piece is hand-carved from a wooden substrate, and gleams in Bodmer-Turner's signature stark white textural surface finish, achieved here by coating milk paint over laminated Japanese Washi paper. The wispy, gravity-defying forms of Bodmer-Turner's work is as much about minimalism as it is about movement, and the artist's reverence for history is apparent in the swooping silhouette of "Chair III", paying homage to Carlo Bugatti's celebrated "Cobra Chair" (1902), in which the seat and back are one continuous S-curve, entirely covered in hand-painted parchment paper and embellished with copper decorations. Available for immediate placement, this unique piece is a sophisticated yet playful object that adds a sculptural element to any space. About Simone Bodmer-Turner Born in 1990 in Berkeley, California, Simone Bodmer-Turner’s multidisciplinary studio is built around the foundation of her iconic line of abstract, ceramic vases which she first introduced in 2018. Articulations of form, those debut pieces were designed as timeless works in conversation with the power of negative space. Following the founding of her studio, Simone evolved her exploration of the medium into organic ceramic sculptures, as well as paintings that are somewhere between assemblage and land art using local soil and plant material. In 2021, Simone made her foray into furniture design introducing Chair I and in 2022 she released Chair II along with an oversized credenza and a series of one-of–a-kind lighting works that were presented as part of the artist’s first solo exhibition — TAKE PART IN — at Matter Projects in New York. In the years that followed, Simone has moved her practice from Brooklyn, New York to rural Massachusetts where she is honing her sculptural medium, designing custom interiors in plaster, and developing a body of multidisciplinary furniture that straddles the line between art and design. In the spring of 2024, she will present her second solo exhibition entitled ‘A Year Without a Kiln’ at Emma Scully...

Sculptural Polished Bronze and Iron Fireplace Andirons by Simone Bodmer-Turner
By Simone Bodmer-Turner
Located in New York, NY
Sculptural polished bronze and iron fireplace andirons by Simone Bodmer-Turner. Highly decorative and fully functional, this set of two andirons bring an element of atmospheric sophistication to the hearth. Fluid with movement, yet understated, the pieces were produced in close collaboration with a Massachusetts-based bronze foundry and blacksmith. With functionality and timelessness at the forefront of Bodmer-Turner’s newest body of work, her language of shape-making – biomorphic, sinewy, and sometimes surrealist – can be found in the subtext of these pieces, where winks of whimsy are folded into practical forms for the interior environment. Sold as a pair, the "Winged Andirons" are made to order with a lead time of 12 weeks. Side or End Table with Cast Glass Top on Charred and Carved Reclaimed Wood Block
By Rafael Prieto
Located in New York, NY
One-of-a-kind side or end table in hand-carved and charred reclaimed wood with cast glass top. Fueled by curiosity while pushing function and materiality to its limits, this piece would make an evocative yet understated sculptural accent to your design project. The table is grounded by a solid block of expertly-crafted reclaimed pine; sourcing wood that was previously used is the designer’s preference as a sustainability practice, as well as for the richness of character only found in repurposed lumber. The wood block was hand-carved to cradle a volume of crucible-poured glass, cast in a mold made from a granite landscaping boulder. The glass “stone” is a subtly naturalistic design detail, retaining the course surface texture of a boulder, yet entirely transparent. This piece debuted at Design Miami, in December 2023. The edition shown here is available now, with forward editions shipping in 10-12 weeks. Artist Information: Rafael Prieto (b. 1981, Mexico) is the Founder and Creative Director of Savvy, a New York and México City - based creative studio. Since founding Savvy in 2012, Prieto has brought his distinct perspective to the building of artistic, innovative and personal concepts in the arts, hospitality, retail, and more. Rafael is also the owner of Casa Bosques...

Stone Top Coffee Table on Wood Block Base with Cast Glass and Ceramic Details
By Rafael Prieto
Located in New York, NY
The centerpiece of Rafael Prieto's debut solo exhibition in 2023 was the "Low Table," a one-of-a-kind work comprising four of the elements Prieto selected to express a sort of spatial poetry through materiality—wood, stone, glass and ceramic. Each material undergoes an individual finishing process to become united in singular form, the disparate entities creating asymetrical balance and contrasting textures pleasing to both the eye and the touch. The slab top is blue sandstone, with rough hewn hand-chiseled edges that ripple with energy. A hand-broken fragment of white-glazed ceramic tile, cast from a mold made using the denim jacket of the designer’s partner, is inlaid into the stone, adding an element of romance and another layer of tactility to the overall piece. The sandstone slab rests atop two solid blocks of expertly-crafted reclaimed yellow pine; sourcing wood that was previously used is the designer’s preference as a sustainability practice, as well as for the richness of character only found in repurposed lumber. One of the wood blocks was hand-carved to receive a volume of crucible-poured glass, cast in a mold made from a granite landscaping boulder. The glass “stone” is a subtly naturalistic design detail, retaining the course surface texture of a boulder, yet entirely transparent. This piece is a unique object of functional art that is conversational in nature, making it the ultimate centerpiece for collectors of contemporary design to treasure for years to come.
