About Jeanette May

As a contemporary photographer, I create beautiful, playful images that explore the representation of nature, technology, wealth, and death...with a sense of humor. I now work exclusively in photography, but my painting background is evident in my choice of subject matter and rich color palette. My “Tech Vanitas” still lifes resemble 17th Century Dutch vanitas paintings. I juggle the conflicting desires to acquire new technologies and preserve beautifully designed, obsolete machines. My arrangements of vintage decor and dramatic lighting also hint at product photography ...Read More

“Easy on the Eyes: Clare” Photograph of a Pirate in a Halloween Scene
Located in Brooklyn, NY
“Easy on the Eyes: Clare“ is a staged photograph of an attractive man dressed as a pirate on Halloween. In this series, I explore the female gaze by providing visual pleasure specifically designed for a female viewer—though others may look over her shoulder. Each scene includes a male character depicted in mid-narrative and an “implied woman” somewhere just outside the frame. She is not visible, but we do see her Little Bo Peep costume accessories. He is the photograph’s subject matter, but she is the narrative’s protagonist. Each photograph is titled after the female character in the quoted text. The text panel and image are printed together on a single sheet of paper. The implied narrative of the photograph is juxtaposed with a passage from a novel by a prominent female author describing a male character. The text disrupts, misdirects, and complicates the implied narrative of the photographic image (read text below). This photograph is an Archival Pigment Print on Cotton Fiber Paper, printed in a limited-edition of 10. The standard print sizes are 15 x 30” and 20 x 40”. The photograph is signed and numbered on the back and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Prints are sold unframed; framing may be arranged for an additional cost. Free shipping may be available from 1st Dibs. Apply code: FREESHIP. Text panel: “The Time Traveler’s Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. We stand in line for a few minutes. Henry seems tense, on guard. He holds my hand...

“Morbidity & Mortality: Beaver” Humorous Photograph of Cat Toy in Crime Scene
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Morbidity & Mortality: Beaver" is my light-hearted and fluffy response to the current popular fascination with depictions of murder and forensics. Designed to be murdered by your dog or cat, pet toys play the role of dead bodies in my staged crime scene photographs. The tiny beaver dangling from a string is perfectly reasonable when seen at the pet store...

“Still Life with Binoculars” Vintage Tech Photograph about Bird Watching
Located in Brooklyn, NY
“Still Life with Binoculars” appeared in Audubon Magazine, Winter 2021 issue. This bird watching still life continues the exploration of vintage tech begun in my “Tech Vanitas” series. Surrounded by rich silks and patterned wallpapers, playful still lifes of familiar devices suggest 17th Century Dutch paintings. My photographs display a fascination with dated merchandise, industrial design, and scientific ingenuity. The gadgets in this photograph reflect the technology used by 20th Century and contemporary bird watchers, including an answering machine for rare bird alert systems, binoculars, camera, flashlights, bird app on an iPhone, compass, Bird Photo...
