Grapes and French Cheese
Located in Woodbury, CT
Oil on panel, signed and dated 2001. French wooden frame in ivory with gold leaf. Unframed size: 19.7 inches high x 23.6 inches wide. Framed size: 26.4 inches high x 30.5 inches wide x 1 inch deep. Sold framed. The first Eyckmans’ painting to employ a brighter, golden palette, this everyday kitchen scene explores the differing textures of the objects within. The artist’s love of all things French is exemplified here with antique pottery, a starched linen tablecloth, breadboard and, of course, fruit and favorite cheeses. Note the superb shadowing of the board extending over the table, the detailing in the chèvre and paper wrapping to the left, and the asymmetrical cluster of stemmed Muscat grapes, all illuminated by easterly light. Classical in perspective and execution, but with a more contemporary feel that derives from the use of color and light, this painting marks a transformational point in the artist’s work. This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden...

Cityscape with Oil Tins
Located in Woodbury, CT
Oil on panel, signed and dated 2015. French handmade wooden Delf frame, raised panel with dark gold/bronze patina and gold leaf. Unframed size: 31.5 inches high x 29.5 inches wide. Framed size: 39 inches high x 37 inches wide x 1 inch deep. Sold framed. Stefaan’s love of graphic design fuels his large collection of vintage tins and toys, obtained from local flea markets. He finds their hand-drawn shapes, logos, and lettering to be particularly powerful compared to today’s computer-generated fonts. The artist never cleans his toys, as the dirt and grease gives them more authenticity and retains the feeling of being used. In this painting, Stefaan uses a low perspective to invoke an animated urban scene where the toy car drives through the building-like tins. Executed in a strong classical chiaroscuro, particularly evident in the folds of the heirloom linen...

Nest
Located in Woodbury, CT
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 2019. French matte black wooden frame over red bolus. Unframed size: 28.7 inches high x 36.2 inches wide. Framed size: 38.2 inches high x 45.6 inches wide x 1.75 inches deep. Sold framed. Stefaan enjoys all naturalia, but particularly bird’s nests, as he often finds abandoned ones on his rural property. Each one is special, but all nests adhere to a mathematical sequence, the Golden Ratio, to build a spiraling structure from the inside out. This bird’s nest with quail eggs and jay feather was painted exclusively as the signature work for the artist’s inaugural U.S. Solo Exhibition. The detailing of the nest laced with moss demonstrates the intricate balance between the bold, confident brushstrokes to define the subjects, and the restraint required to keep the composition light, loose, and airy. This large, lifelike work is the centerpiece of a film commissioned by The Elemental Garden...

Vanitas
Located in Woodbury, CT
Oil on panel, signed and dated 2000. Unframed size: 15.7 inches high x 23.6 inches wide x 0.25 inches deep. Sold unframed. Reverse side with older, faded Eyckmans' painting and artist's label. Created in 2000, and much inspired by the Old Masters, this painting combines many “vanitas” symbols—reminders that change and death are inevitable. The skull, aging books, extinguished candle, fallen cup, and stopped watch are beautifully composed in close-up, utilizing a minimum of negative space. One can see the fuzzy and unrecognizable reflection of the painter, quite rare for him, in the silver incense holder. Note the complex composition, the strong use of chiaroscuro, and the masterful depiction of the human skull, the threads of the unravelling books, and the smoke of the candle. Please note that the last photo is of the reverse side of the painting, indicating that the panel was reused. Unlike Stefaan’s other works, this painting is sold unframed. This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden...

Framed size: 25.2 inches high x 25.2 inches wide x 1.25 inches deep. Sold framed. Inspired by the modest works of the French painter, Chardin, this classic composition focuses on the simple, zen-like qualities of the gustatory delights of Stefaan’s locale, where bread and cheeses are freshly made and sold at his favorite outdoor market. Interposed with a large knife and antique glass wine bottle...

Thy Name is Woman
Located in Woodbury, CT
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 2018. French handmade Delf wooden frame, dark bronze patina with gold leaf. Unframed size: 19.7 inches high x 24.02 inches wide. Framed size: 28 inches high x 32.3 inches wide x 1.25 inches deep. Sold framed. Stefaan was gifted this skull by a friend, whose carpenter father found many years ago in a false ceiling. The skull sat in his workshop and was eventually named “Gilda”. The composition is unusual in its stark simplicity that speaks to the inevitable death we all face. Fascinating without being morbid, the arrangement is simple yet bold. Note the extraordinary brushwork detailed in the shroud, as well as the intricacies of the skull. The slash of cobalt blue in the background provides an ethereal quality. The title is adapted from Shakespeare’s Hamlet and is the artist’s inside joke on the character “Guildenstern” vs “Gilda”. Part of the title can be seen in the lower right quadrant of the painting. Compared to “Vanitas”, painted in 2000, the artist’s evolution in form and execution is most evident in this 2018 work. This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden...
