Provenance: Property of a private European collector.
Footnote: This design was first seen on the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, which was tiled on the instructions of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent around 1545. Soon after similar tiles appeared on several building in Aleppo, most notably Bait Jumbiatt, the Ummayad Mosque and the Khosrowiyya Mosque, as well as numerous private houses. Dating from the mid 19th century, the set comprises of twelve 6-inch by 6-inch tiles in Pugin style with a glazed finish.
These vibrant tiles showcase a repeating stylised floral pattern in yellow with a moody brown background, perfect for use as an entranceway floor or fireplace hearth in period and contemporary properties alike.
The back of each tile is clearly impressed by W Godwin, Lugwardine and in excellent clean condition, making them a rare find.
