Gothic Building and Garden Elements

GOTHIC STYLE

The Gothic Revival movement (also called Victorian Gothic or Neo-Gothic) emerged in Britain in the 1740s, and reached its height in the late-19th century. The style is characterized by such decorative flourishes as pointed arches, floral details, finials, heraldic motifs and linenfold carving. The movement was rooted in religious and social conservatism. Its proponents, who included Charles Barry and A.W.N. Pugin, the architects of London’s Houses of Parliament (designed in 1840), believed that the art and architecture of the Middle Ages were authentically spiritual and inherently moral.

In the United States, the Gothic Revival movement shaped both public buildings and private houses. Numerous American schools were built in the early-19th century in a style now called Collegiate Gothic. Many builders and craftsmen were inspired by Andrew Jackson Downing’s widely read 1850 book Architecture for Country Houses, which posited that a family’s home should exemplify their values — and that the Gothic Revival style was particularly well-suited to scholars and clergymen. Furniture with detailing that mirrored that of Gothic Revival buildings appeared in the same period. Such pieces typically feature dark, intricately carved wood, and upholstery in velvet or leather.

Much like the castle or cathedral that inspired it, a Gothic Revival chair makes a bold design statement. And while you probably don’t have to cross a moat or raise a portcullis to get through your front door, a Gothic Revival piece might make a statement that your home is indeed your castle.

Rare Monumental French Gothic All-Wrought Iron Double Castle Door
Rare Monumental French Gothic All-Wrought Iron Double Castle Door

Rare Monumental French Gothic All-Wrought Iron Double Castle Door

Located in Doha, QA

Among the rarest survivals of medieval architectural ironwork, this monumental pair of Gothic castle doors (one door-two wings) represents an extraordinary achievement in the art of the medieval blacksmith. Entirely hand forged from wrought iron and assembled with individually forged rivets, the doors embody the engineering skill, defensive requirements, and uncompromising craftsmanship of late medieval France. Unlike the overwhelming majority of surviving castle doors- which rely on heavy oak cores reinforced with iron straps- these remarkable examples are constructed almost entirely of wrought iron plates, braces, and structural members. Such an approach demanded immense quantities of iron, exceptional technical expertise, and hundreds of hours of skilled labor, making doors of this type exceptionally costly to produce and reserved only for the most important fortified spaces. Their bold Gothic silhouette, terminating in a pointed arch, corresponds to the original medieval stone opening from which they originate. Massive diagonal reinforcing members, broad riveted iron plates, forged hinge assemblies, and individually hand-worked rivets form a powerful architectural composition that is as sculptural as it is functional. Every surface tells the story of more than five centuries of existence. The wrought iron retains its rich historic patina, displaying centuries of oxidation, forge textures, hammer marks, laminated iron surfaces, and evidence of traditional forge-welding techniques. The irregular rivet heads, overlapping iron plates, and subtle variations in thickness reveal unmistakable hand craftsmanship impossible to reproduce through modern industrial methods. Architecturally, these doors were almost certainly created for one of the most secure areas of a medieval fortress or château. Their all-iron construction suggests installation within a treasury, armoury, prison, fortified vault, strong room, or other location where maximum security and resistance to fire were essential. Such commissions were reserved for castles of considerable importance and required the work of master blacksmiths operating at the highest level of their craft. Stylistically and technically, the doors date most convincingly to the late 15th to early 16th century (circa 1480–1530). However, the conservative nature of medieval architectural ironwork, together with the Gothic form and traditional forging methods, leaves open the possibility that portions of the construction- or the original commission itself- may extend into the 14th century, making these doors potentially even earlier than their generally accepted dating. Authentic medieval all-wrought-iron castle doors...

Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550
Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550

Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550

Located in Dallas, TX

Often when centuries-old trunks did not survive the passage of time, 19th-century menuisiers (French woodworkers) would salvage the surviving wood and carve new furniture such as desks and similar trunks. The facade was typically the most ornate section of these antique trunks, making intact frontages highly valued antiques. Hand-carved from oak in Picardie, France, circa 1550, this period Gothic architectural is a beautiful example of an antique trunk facade that was not incorporated into a more recent furnishing. Picardie is a former administrative region in northern France that is home to many Gothic cathedrals. The Amiens Cathedral (mid-13th century) is the largest standing cathedral in Europe and is truly a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Our trunk frontage has five vertically oriented inset panels embellished with various forms of Gothic tracery, including high-arching niches...

Antique Gothic Fire Screen w. Handpainted Earth Angle, Saints and Carved Knights
Antique Gothic Fire Screen w. Handpainted Earth Angle, Saints and Carved Knights

Antique Gothic Fire Screen w. Handpainted Earth Angle, Saints and Carved Knights

Located in Lisse, NL

Stunning firescreen with a famous earth angle, two famous saint paintings and more. With meaningful 'religious art' from centuries-past being one of our specialities we were amazed, not only to find this rare and marvelous fire screen, but also because of its excellent condition. But then again, we think we see that more often, because true beauty, quality and meaningful antiques radiate something that was already there when it was created. This 'something' commands respect and this is why most people take very good care of very special pieces. Since much of what we know now about Christianity and about monastic life in its various 'forms' was given shape since the life of Christ, but possibly mostly so in Gothic / Medieval times, much of this is expressed in European Gothic Art of the past circa 8 centuries. This rare and beautiful fire screen from the early 1800s, which can also be used as a small room divider or a unique work of (decorative) art, is one of those unique Gothic antiques. The hand-carved knight sculptures are 'fun' and meaningful at the same time, because one of them looks a little desperate and the other looks more at piece and in prayer. The hand-carved winged angel in the middle/ on top seems to be overlooking this 'Gesamtkunstwerk'. What makes this antique really stand out and what also makes it complete are the three hand-painted panels inside this screen. Each of the figures portrayed here have dedicated their lifes to doing good, giving love and hope and thus healing people. In the centre is a glorious painting (in medieval style) of Earth Angel St. Raphael and the boy Tobias. The lady Saint on the right, we feel, is Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) and the Saint on the left, we feel, is either Francis de Sales...
