An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare antique Edwardian English 9-karat rose gold and enamel cigarette case; an addition to our diverse range of smoking related silverware. This exceptional antique Edwardian 9ct rose gold cigarette case has a plain rectangular form with rounded corners. This antique case has a subtly curved form proffering a comfortable fit in the majority of pockets. The anterior cover is ornamented with an impressive enamel panel depicting four jockeys riding horses in a race, with stands full of spectators in the background. The enamel panel is further embellished with the caption 'Cambridgeshire 1902'. The posterior cover is embellished with contemporary engraved inscriptions in the form of a business card, denoting: the telegraphic address 'Shamefaced, London', the telephone details 'No 112 Avenue, 9890 Central', the name 'E Israel', the job position 'Turf Commission Agent', in addition to the address '16 Philpot Lane E.C.'. Miniature is a very ancient technique which consists of painting works in small proportions. It was born for the decoration of the first letter of the paragraph of the books. Over the years, however, this technique is refined and enriched, then moving on to precious personal items. Hand-painted miniatures can be done with multiple different techniques. With very fine sable hair brushes you draw the subject starting from the perimeter and then gradually adding various layers of color. It is necessary to carry out various firings very often so that the colors harden and are not absorbed by the underlying glaze as, during the subsequent firings at 750 ° C, during liquefaction, it would spread irremediably. Hence the need to form the painting a little at a time, cooking it numerous times. Therefore it is necessary to proceed with numerous retouching, often overlapping different colors that only the painter's experience knows.
