The cylindrical capitals are encircled with bands of tooled decoration and retain the original hallmarked detachable push fit sconces. The waisted section of each column features a plain panelled quatrefoil shaped knop. These Victorian taper candlesticks have quatrefoil shaped stepped bases with central plain sunken wells. Each taper candlestick does not have a weighted base. Condition These solid silver taper candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each base and full hallmarks to the sleeve of each sconce are all very clear; the full hallmarks to the base of one candlestick has wear in keeping with age, but remains clear and legible. A fine and impressive pair of vintage Elizabeth II English sterling silver candleholders in the Art Deco style; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. These vintage Elizabeth II sterling silver candleholders have a circular waisted form. The plain capital to each candleholder is supported by two plain waisted moulded arms forming a shaped column. The upper terminals of the columns are embellished with chased ribbed ornamentation. The lower portion of the column of each candleholder integrates into a stepped foot to the circular base. The circular bases are each supported with four stepped feet, all crafted in the iconic Art Deco style. An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare pair of large antique George V English sterling silver lyre candlesticks; an addition of our ornamental silverware collection. These exceptional antique George V English sterling silver candlesticks have been modelled in the form lyre. The upper portion of the stringed instrument is surmounted with a swept oval capital, encompassed with embossed concave batwing decoration. The capitals retain the original detachable hallmarked push fit sconces, each embellished with thread decorated borders to the rim. The column of each candlestick features details replicating the opposing scrolling frame and five-strings of the musical instrument. Each oval swept base is embellished with fluted batwing decoration, accented with further thread decoration to the rim. These antique candlesticks have weighted bases and retain the original hallmarked silver lined underside. Such large candlesticks, modelled in the form of lyre, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Condition These rare sterling silver candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and are in exceptional condition. An outstanding pair of sterling silver candlesticks by English silversmith Alexander Johnston. Reflecting the mid-18th century Georgian taste for the Rococo style, these candlesticks feature deeply chased decoration, from shells and palms to acanthus and rosettes, as well as an engraved armorial on each pedestal. Their exuberant yet balanced design is characteristic of the sophisticated style brought to England by French Huguenot silversmiths in the 1700s. Alexander Johnston first entered his mark in 1747 and work such as his, as well as that of artists like the celebrated Paul de Lamerie, indicated the adoption of French forms in all of the decorative arts, from furniture to textiles, hailing the dramatic shift from the more restrained classical manner.
