A magnificent, fine and impressive rare pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver candlesticks modelled in the form of cobra snakes; an addition of our ornamental silverware collection These magnificent and rare antique Victorian cast Scottish sterling silver candlesticks have been realistically modelled in the form of a slithering cobra. Each cast silver snake model is surmounted with a circular baluster shaped capital, embellished with bands of leaf decoration; each hallmarked detachable capital secures with a screw fitment. The cobra shaped columns of the candlesticks are ornamented with details reproducing the snake's scales and anatomical features. These magnificent candlesticks are the finest examples of their type you could hope to acquire. NOTE: These candlesticks bear the foreign manufatcure hallmark alongside the full Scottish marks; it can be determined that George Edward & Sons were the importers. The piece bears characteristics reflecting Kutch (Cutch) silverware, and similar candlesticks were created by Gorham Manufacturing Company in the Egyptian revival style; these candlesticks bear a lotus flower decorated capital. The upper terminals of the columns are embellished with chased ribbed ornamentation. The lower portion of the column of each candleholder integrates into a stepped foot to the circular base. The circular bases are each supported with four stepped feet, all crafted in the iconic Art Deco style. These magnificent antique Georgian English sterling silver candlesticks have a plain subtly tapering columnar form. The large and impressive Corinthian capital of each candlestick retains the original hallmarked detachable push fit sconce ornamented with a plain moulded rim. The cylindrical columns are supported by a cuboid plinth to an impressive plain square stepped three tier base. Each plinth is embellished with a fine and impressive bright cut engraved coat of arms depicting the Head family coat of arms encircled with a belt accented with the family motto 'Study Quiet'. The bases retain the original contemporary engraved inscription 'A token of respect from Francis Head to her aunt Dame Mary Ann Head. 1803' to the lowest tier. Both candlesticks are fitted with turned mahogany bases to the underside. These magnificent Georgian candlesticks were crafted by George Eadon, George Kibbles & John Weaver of George Eadon & Co. An outstanding pair of sterling silver candlesticks by English silversmith Alexander Johnston. Reflecting the mid-18th century Georgian taste for the Rococo style, these candlesticks feature deeply chased decoration, from shells and palms to acanthus and rosettes, as well as an engraved armorial on each pedestal. Their exuberant yet balanced design is characteristic of the sophisticated style brought to England by French Huguenot silversmiths in the 1700s. Alexander Johnston first entered his mark in 1747 and work such as his, as well as that of artists like the celebrated Paul de Lamerie, indicated the adoption of French forms in all of the decorative arts, from furniture to textiles, hailing the dramatic shift from the more restrained classical manner.
