A beautiful, rare solid silver Anglo-French octagonal pocket sundial with compass by Michael Butterfield, circa 1700. The sundial is made for a latitude of 44° and could be used in places in the south of France such as Avignon and elsewhere along this parallel. The elaborately engraved base plate has a Roman chapter ring on which the gnomon (a triangular flap) casts its shadow. It is signed by the maker in the following manner: Butterfield A Paris. On one side is a glazed recessed compass with a blued steel hand to position the instrument in such a way that the time can be read. The hinged triangular gnomon is richly engraved and in the shape of a bird’s head. The folding gnomon and cut corners enable the dial to be carried in the pocket. The underside shows the latitudes of various Southern-French places in the relevant areas Its maker Michael Butterfield was an English instrument maker who based himself in 'Le Quay de l'Horloge' of Paris from circa 1685. These types of dials, often replicated by other makers, became known as Butterfield Dials...

There is only a small series of comparable table clocks from the workshop of David Roentgen known. The present clock seems to be the first example of the cooperation between David Roentgen and the court clockmaker Delolme in Brunswick. The case is meticulously crafted and both case and movement are of superb quality. David Roentgen, called the "most celebrated ébéniste in Europe" by his contemporaries, was a successful entrepreneur who transformed the business founded by his father, Abraham Roentgen...

A German Art Nouveau wooden mantel clock by Junghans, made circa 1910. The case has an architectural arched form with decorative wood inlay to the front, rounded bun feet and side sound grilles. The clock features an ornate brass dial plate with engraved floral decoration, a silvered chapter ring with Arabic numerals and two subsidiary dials above. One subsidiary dial is marked Chime / Silent, while the other is for regulation of the movement. The brass movement is stamped with the Junghans eight-point star trademark and marked “B10”. On Junghans movements of this period, this marking is generally understood as a date code: “B” indicating the second half of the year and “10” indicating 1910. Therefore, the movement can be dated to the second half of 1910. The case combines dark polished wood with warm brass details, giving the clock a refined early 20th century Art Nouveau appearance.
