About the Item

This beautiful antique clock, crafted in the refined Louis XVI style is of traditional form, but is notable for its intricate and extensive decoration. The central circular enamel dial is set within an gilt bronze (ormolu) case, which is decorated with swirling acanthus leaf scrolls, floral garlands. Two cherubs are depicted below the dial, and above sits the figure of Diana, the Classical Roman goddess of hunting, with her bow sitting by her on a branch. The Louis XVI style is often referred to as the Neoclassical style, and originated in mid-18th Century France and Britain, where it dominated the decorative arts until the influential Empire style of the early 19th Century. The Louis XVI style takes his name from the last French monarch before the revolution - Louis XVI himself (1754-1793). The Louis XVI Neoclassical forms were inspired by the Classical art and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome, which was considered to embody the perfection of harmonious forms. In particular, mythological representations on 17th and 18th Century works became immensely popular.
