19th Century French Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock with Figural Couple and Marble Base

Located in SANT ADRIÀ DE BESÒS, ES

An impressive and highly decorative French mantel clock dating to the second half of the 19th century, executed in richly ornamented gilt metal with white stone inserts. The composition features an elegant standing lady and gentleman flanking the circular enamel dial, framed beneath an elaborate crest with twin birds and scrolling rococo ornament. The entire design reflects the celebrated French taste for theatrical and romantic interior pieces of the period. The architectural base is lavishly decorated with deep scrolling foliage, shell motifs and openwork ornament, contrasted beautifully by the white stone panels. The clock retains its original mechanical movement with bell strike, recently tested. It runs steadily and strikes correctly on the half hour and hour. During testing it operated reliably for several days. A striking statement piece for mantel, console or library interior. Dimensions Height: 42.5 cm (16.73 in) Width: 34 cm (13.39 in) Depth: 13 cm (5.12 in) Condition Good antique condition overall. Minor age-related wear and light rubbing to gilded surfaces. Fine Marble and Bronze fFgural Clock Candelabras by Lemerle Charpentier
Fine Marble and Bronze fFgural Clock Candelabras by Lemerle Charpentier

Fine Marble and Bronze fFgural Clock Candelabras by Lemerle Charpentier

By Lemerle Charpentier 1

Located in Swedesboro, NJ

This exquisite three-piece French bronze and marble clock garniture by Lemerle-Charpentierwith a movement by Samuel Marti and is a superb example of late 19th-century Parisian decorative arts, combining fine sculpture, architectural marble, and precision horology into a unified and highly ornamental ensemble. Comprising a central mantel clock flanked by a matching pair of figural candelabra, the set was designed as a complete decorative statement for a grand salon, mantelpiece, or formal interior. The central clock is mounted in luminous white marble, richly accented with finely chased gilt bronze mounts. Atop the case stands a beautifully modeled putto figure in dark patinated bronze, animated and expressive, holding a torch aloft—an allegorical symbol of enlightenment, time, and knowledge. The contrast between the dark bronze figure, warm gilded details, and cool marble ground creates depth and visual drama. The circular enamel dial with Roman numerals is elegantly framed, underscoring the refined balance between function and ornament. Flanking the clock are a matching pair of bronze figural candelabra, each centered by a sculptural putto standing on a marble base. The figures support scrolling, gilt bronze candle arms terminating in classical bobeches, creating graceful upward movement and symmetry. The sculptural modeling of the figures—soft anatomy, expressive faces, and dynamic poses—demonstrates the high artistic standards expected of Parisian luxury objects during this period. Lemerle-Charpentier: Parisian Masters of Decorative Clocks The set bears the name of Lemerle-Charpentier, a respected Parisian firm active in the second half of the 19th century. Lemerle-Charpentier was renowned not only as a clockmaker, but as a collaborator with elite bronze casters, sculptors, and marble workshops, producing clocks and garnitures that rivaled the finest decorative arts of the era. Their pieces were often signed on the dial or movement, signaling quality, reliability, and fashionable taste. The firm specialized in luxurious mantel clocks, figural garnitures, and exhibition-quality pieces, many of which were exported internationally to decorate aristocratic homes and refined interiors. Lemerle-Charpentier clocks frequently feature award-winning movements paired with elaborate bronze sculpture, making them especially desirable to collectors today. Decorative and Collectible Significance Three-piece clock sets of this caliber were designed to convey status, refinement, and artistic literacy. Today, original Lemerle-Charpentier garnitures are prized for their sculptural quality, historical integrity, and decorative impact. Elegant, cohesive, and richly detailed, this Lemerle-Charpentier bronze and marble clock set is a timeless centerpiece—equally compelling as a functional timepiece and as a work of French sculptural art.Samuel Marti et Cie was one of the most important and respected French clock movement...

19th Century, French Gilt Bronze and Marble Mantel Clock Garniture Set

Located in SANT ADRIÀ DE BESÒS, ES

A refined French mantel clock garniture set executed in gilt bronze and white stone, dating to the 19th century. The ensemble consists of a central pendulum clock accompanied by a matching pair of decorative urns. The architectural composition with classical columns reflects the neoclassical taste characteristic of French decorative arts of the period. The clock features an enamel dial with black numerals and finely shaped hands, housed within a cylindrical case suspended between two columns. The case is adorned with cast gilt bronze mounts incorporating floral and classical decorative motifs, while the pendulum is decorated with a sun mask motif. The accompanying urns echo the design language of the clock, combining white stone bodies with gilt bronze mounts and twin handles, creating a balanced three-piece composition suitable for mantel or console display. Attribution and dating remain based on stylistic characteristics visible in the set. The exact stone type has not been professionally tested. Dimensions Clock: Height: 43 cm / 16.9 in Width: 24 cm / 9.45 in Depth: 12 cm / 4.72 in Urns (each): Height: 31 cm / 12.2 in Width: 14 cm / 5.5 in Depth: 11 cm / 4.33 in Condition Very good antique condition for its age. The striking function does not currently activate. The movement appears complete and remains in very good visual condition; however, as with all antique clocks...
