A fabulous Gucci 5 piece Desk set in a Crocodile or Allifgator grain leather or real skin. It was gifted by Frank Sinatra to his close friend and neighbor Daniel Schwartz of Rancho Mirage, a neighboring town of Palm Springs. It is marked on the inside DS Noel FS. It was purchased from the estate of Daniel and Natalie Schwartz. The desk pad has a new green paper blotter. The ink blotter has a new matching green paper. The set is in remarkably good condition. We have a similar set listed for sale on this site. This set dates from the 1970’s. It was featured in an ad in Architectural Digest from the period. The desk pad is approximately 19.25x15.25 inches. The leather is in good condition. There are numerous rough edge spots and minor marks throughout. The letter opener has some gold plate loss. Because the VPK uses 127 film, it is more compact than contemporary folding cameras using 120 film and larger sheet film formats offered by Kodak; measuring approximately 12×6.3×2.7 cm when stowed, it could be carried in a vest pocket, as the name suggests. Frank Hurley, official photographer of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, salvaged a VPK and three rolls of film from the sinking of the expedition ship Endurance with the loss of most of his photographic equipment. A magnificent magnifying glass by the creme de la creme of English retailer's, Asprey of Bond Street, London. The silver is fully hallmarked for London 1928 together with the maker's mark W.M. The silver is also signed "Asprey London". Excellent antique condition with minor wear commensurate with age measuring 7 3/4" x 3 5/8" x 5/8". A slight wobble to the magnifier due to the traditional pinned construction rather than glued, mentioned purely for accuracy. The handle is made from polished Shagreen, a leather made from sharkskin or the skin of a Stingray. This type of Shagreen was first made popular by Jean-Claude Galluchat (d1774) a master leather worker in the Court of Louis XV in France. It became a fashion amongst the French aristocracy and later throughout Europe. Shagreen is derived from the French word “Chagrin”.
