Birgitta Ara, Finnish (1934 - 2009) three bronze sculptures from 1980, edition number 2/12, each signed 'ara 2/12' (4) Birgitta Majlis Juslin, later Birgitta Ara, born 7 August 1934 in Helsinki. Parents singer and actor Ture Ara and public school teacher Elsie Juslin.
 Born in Helsinki in 1934, Ara studied decorative painting at the School of Art and Design from 1952-1955. Later she moved to Paris to model and eventually returned to her art by the 1970's when she exhibited copper sculpture reliefs at the Ecole Nationale Superiere des Arts. She won numerous awards, including the Prix des Jeunes in an exhibition for women's art at the Museum of Modern Art, and a relief was selected for the Salon d'Automne, the art salon in the Grand Palais. She received the Grand Prix de Sculpture at the International Exhibition for women's art in the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris. She eventually returned to Finland in 1991. Exceptional and beautiful large platter designed by Birger Kaipiainen for Rörstrand in limited edition, number 294/500. Decor with apples, plums and bunches of grapes. Birger Kaipiainen has been called "the master of ceramics" and "the undisputed ruler of decorative art". Highlights of iridescent glaze. The platter is in mint condition. No sign of use. Birger Kaipiainen began his career at the Arabia Art Department in 1937 and quickly found his own way to make art. The soon-to-begin Winter War and several losses in his personal life cast a dark shadow over the beginning of his artistic career, and this manifested as sadness and longing in his early works. Tapio Wirkkala designed a large number of items fo Kultakeskus OY. Materials ranged from silver to bronze and other metals. This particular model was introduced in 1971 in a number of different sizes ranging from 160-290 mm. 48 pieces of these were given in 1978 World Champions sky competition in Lahti, Finland. This was also officially introduced in an exhibition in London in 1972. This design is of course very functional as well, since these bowls can be used for a variety of reasons, such as fruit bowls and so on. These 2 pieces came from the same household, so they sustain similar patina, since they aged in the same surroundings. The measures 25x8 cm are for the bigger bowl.. The smaller one is 16x7 cm. The bigger bowl has beautiful darker beauty marks or vintage spots 🙂 that only come with age and use, refer to pictures please. Rarely does a designer command such an expansive talent and career as Wirkkala did.
