Vintage Teak Burl Wood bowl, Java, Mid-20th Century. 9-3/4" dia by 4-1/2" tall. This lovely burl bowl was used to hold the betel nut and condiments for betel nut chewing, an essential form of social interaction throughout southeast Asia. Because sharing betel was such an important act of hospitality, the vessels and paraphernalia involved also became highly prestigious objects. This beautifully figured bowl was such an object, and would have been treasured for the quality and density of its burl. It is hand made from a single piece of teak burl. Originally it would have had a metal liner, most probably of bronze or brass, and would have held a number of smaller metal vessels...
